Inside The Orange Box: How To Make A Bed, Part 2

21
AUGUST
2015

We gave you part one last week, so today we give you part two of this Orange Box topic: Our designers’ favorite ways to make a bed!

DESIGNER TODD PRINCE

“I think bedding should be super practical. You have to be able to clean it! I love a coverlet with a duvet folded at the foot of the bed. That allows your bedding to be changed out with the seasons, since we need to be able to do that here in the South! On a king bed, I love doing two king size pillows against the headboard with 3 euroshams in front. I’m all about practicality, texture, and color. I love a pretty and functional bed!”

DESIGNER CAMILLE HOLLAND

“My favorite way to make a bed usually starts with crisp white bedding and a white coverlet, while using a neutral soft patterned fabric for euros or accent pillows! Simple and classic!”

SummerHouse Designers' Favorite Ways to Make A Bed // www.alwayssummerblog.com

DESIGNER LINDSEY TOWNSEND

“I like to keep an overall clean and simplistic look, definitely not too over done.  I love accent fabrics, so if I use a really bold pattern fabric as a large lumbar across the front, I will use fairly simple euro shams behind the lumbar to balance it out. I tend to use euro shams most often because I like the height they give (unless the headboard is very low, then I will use standard shams.) Also, I like always having something at the foot of the bed. It can be a folded duvet, throw, or bed scarf. Layers of texture and soft pattern can help create a most inviting environment!”

DESIGNER KATY HINES

“I always start with whites for the basics like coverlets, sheets, etc. It’s fresh, crisp, and relaxing. Then I layer color and texture in the accent pillows and throws to tie in with the paint, art, and accessories.”

Inside The Orange Box: How To Make A Bed

14
AUGUST
2015

In this round of Inside the Orange Box, we asked our designers to share their favorite ways to make up a bed! As always, we love their answers!

DESIGNER LISA PALMER

“I love an all white bed with one accent. I love a beautiful, fluffy down duvet cover tri-folded at the foot of the bed, and on a king bed, I typically like three euros and a 36” x 15” single pillow in front as the decorative accent. The euros sit in front of two king pillowcases.”

SummerHouse Designers share their favorite way to make a bed // www.alwayssummerblog.com

DESIGNER ELISH MOON

“There is always an inner battle when I design bedding for a client. I love simplicity and a clean look…but I looooove accent fabrics. If I do bolder patterns I usually do less pillows. If I do a textured but monochromatic look I might have more layers.”

SummerHouse Designers share their favorite way to make a bed // www.alwayssummerblog.com

DESIGNER MARY COURTNEY JOHNS

“I like to constantly change the way I make a bed, depending on the application. If I am including a pattern, I will either incorporate it in the shams or the accent pillows in front. I usually like to keep the coverlet simple to provide a neutral backdrop for the pillows. Any way a bed is dressed, it needs to be inviting and comfortable most of all!”

Extra Seating in the Bedroom

08
JANUARY
2015

One thing we really love is when a bedroom has enough extra room for a little seating area! A comfortable pair of chairs, a great bench, or a cute little sofette add the perfect touch if there’s some extra space in a large bedroom. A seating area adds warmth and makes the room multi-functional!

Here are a few SummerHouse projects that are great examples of this!

We have a bed on our showroom floor designed by Marty and Lisa that nicely showcases various pieces from the Traditions Linens line! We all are in love with the layered textures, the natural yet sophisticated feel of the bed overall, and the fact that the coverlet is washable!

In fact, all of their stonewashed coverlets are washable, plus a handful of their other fabric/coverlet options. And all of their sheets are made to order, which allows for customization! Another bonus– Almost all of their blankets and coverlets are stocked, so special orders of those items usually ship very quickly! Do you see why we love this line? 🙂

Master Bedroom Masterpiece

08
SEPTEMBER
2014

SummerHouse Interior Designer Elish Phares takes us inside the master bedroom of one of her clients to remind us of just how beautiful simple design can be! We love the tight color palette, clean lines, and all of the natural light! Elish tells us a little bit about what all went into this design!

Shades of Blue // Master Bedroom by Interior Designer Elish Phares // www.alwaysssummerblog.com

What did your client say she wanted in this room and what were you working with?

For this room, we pretty much had a fresh start in there! The only thing we worked with was her bed, which she had already purchased from SummerHouse. I got to start basically from scratch in there. We selected paint colors together, which is when I learned that her favorite color in any shape or form is blue. So I knew I needed to include several shades of blue! I had already redone her living room, and her master is right off of her living, so I wanted it to be different but I wanted it to still flow off of her living.

Shades of Blue // Master Bedroom by Interior Designer Elish Phares // www.alwaysssummerblog.com

Shades of Blue // Master Bedroom by Interior Designer Elish Phares // www.alwaysssummerblog.com

She wanted it to be calm and soothing. I think she and her husband really like to read, so we made a little reading nook for her over in the corner. A big debate for them was whether or not they wanted to keep a TV in the bedroom, but we eventually decided not to, so we ended up with a lot of room for book storage. They can also use their night stands for storage!

Tell us more about working with this client!

She is great to work with! I knew the design would have to involve blue because that’s her favorite. She likes pretty things, but we have to be somewhat practical- we couldn’t do anything too crazy- because her dogs get on everything. Her dogs sleep on the foot of the bed so the bedding, except for the shams and decorative pillow, is washable.

Shades of Blue // Master Bedroom by Interior Designer Elish Phares // www.alwaysssummerblog.com

We were trying to create a balance between the bed she already had, which is actually kind of green, and that blue. So that was kinda where the color palette came from. And she’s not overly girly. So that’s why the lamps are a little bit rustic. She’s kind of drawn to reclaimed things sometimes! It ended up being a really nice mix.

How long have you and this client been working together?

We have been working together for about a year now! She’s made several house updates throughout my time working with her. She’s updated finishes, redone her kitchen, redone her floors, painted…. So we are kind of doing interiors as we are going through some of her home updates.

Thanks Elish! So soothing and relaxing… Keep up the good work! 🙂

Bright Blue in the Bedroom

One Dreamy Nursery

10
JUNE
2014

Designer Todd Prince recently completed a nursery for a very special little girl that we are so excited to share with you! Nursery design is always so much fun, and we love the direction Todd took with this particular one. We’ll let him tell more about it!

Dreamy Little Girl's Nursery by SummerHouse Designer Todd Prince

Dreamy Little Girl's Nursery by SummerHouse Designer Todd Prince

“The first thing the client said is, “I want it dreamy. I want to walk in and it feel soft and dreamy.”

They wanted it comfortable and light with just a little bit of blush and white. They wanted interesting and open storage, which is why we did the open shelving so it can grow with her, and we did a 3-drawer chest as a changing table that can one day be used more like a dresser as she gets older.”

Dreamy Little Girl's Nursery by SummerHouse Designer Todd Prince

Dreamy Little Girl's Nursery by SummerHouse Designer Todd Prince

“We did a swivel glider chair and ottoman in the room that is comfortable for the mother now, but can also grow with the room as the child gets older. We tried to do things that would work great with the nursery but would also grow along with the child. The only thing that really won’t grow with her is the bed.”

Dreamy Little Girl's Nursery by SummerHouse Designer Todd Prince

“My client never said she wanted floral, but when she said “dreamy” to me, I just kept picturing something that was pale and large scale. That blush colored Mary McDonald large-scale fabric we used for drapery was the impetus for everything that happened in the room.

She did say more than once that she didn’t want the room to feel like a big linen bedroom. She wanted texture but she wanted it light. So we did a washable velvet on the swivel rocker, a hide on the ottoman, which is easily cleanable, a heavyweight linen on the drapery, and the carpet is a very thickly woven continuous loop carpet so it has the look of a lambs wool sweater. I had a local artisan tweak the finish on the Restoration Hardware baby bed, and did a mixture of silver and gold on all of the metal in the room. We mixed lots of texture to create interest.”

Dreamy Little Girl's Nursery by SummerHouse Designer Todd Prince

“I tried to make it as flexible as possible all while keeping it completely dreamy like a baby. The word dreamy kept coming up a million times. That was the only word she could find to describe the way she wanted the room to feel!”

Dreamy Little Girl's Nursery by SummerHouse Designer Todd Prince

“We did an antique venation glass mirror to make the space feel like it had a little age to it, but the art is all modern. We hung the really glossy Bonnie Fuchs paintings with two Sarah Haas Otts paintings salon style so nothing would be too matchy matchy.  To play off the artwork, and to counteract the hide and linen, I needed a little bit of shimmer at the bottom of the bed so we did a Classic Cloth silk bedskirt and used a Samuel & Sons trim for just a little bit of shimmer.”

Dreamy Little Girl's Nursery by SummerHouse Designer Todd Prince

Dreamy Little Girl's Nursery by SummerHouse Designer Todd Prince

“And, most importantly, we left as much room as we could in the middle of the room for her to play!”

We love how it turned out, and Todd’s client loved it too, which is the most important opinion of all! We hope you love this as much as we do!

Winter Whites in Social South

The new issue of Social South is out! And it is gorgeous!

Social South features SummerHouse

In this issue, you can find a great story (by our very own Laurel) and some fab photos (by our lovely photographer Anna!) of a bedroom (and adjoining bath) that designer Chelsea Sirmons put together! The title of this story is, appropriately, Winter Whites!

Check out the full story on pages 24 and 25 by clicking here!

Speaking of our dear Chelsea… Since her husband was transferred to South Carolina in December, we find ourselves in need of another interior designer/sales associate! So we’re hiring!

If you are interested in this position or know someone who is, please take a look at this blog post with more information about the job. We’d love to hear from those of you who are qualified! 🙂

Clean and Inviting

Today we have a beautiful project by designer Casey Jenkins to show you! This Master Bedroom turned out exactly how Casey and her clients wanted it, which is always the best outcome! We’ll let Casey tell you a little more about the project!

Bedroom by designer Casey Jenkins // SummerHouse

“The clients started off needing a desk for their office. They were very particular about color finishes and function for their everyday use. Then focus shifted to completing the Living Room.

When I proposed the Living Room, they were so inspired that we decided to complete other rooms as well! This is where we decided to do the Master Bedroom, which is always my favorite room to design! In a Master Bedroom, it is easy to lock down purpose for furniture pieces as well as comfort for the client.”

Master Bedroom by Interior Designer Casey Jenkins | SummerHouse

“These two young clients loved the color palette that was presented to them, and we got started right away! It may be hard to capture by photograph, but the back wall is lined with a Schumacher ivory and matte gold Greek key design. The drapery fabric has an embroidered linen abstract vertical design providing movement and color. The bed was custom made by a local artisan with a light cream linen insert.

We went with all custom pillows and went between slight variations of fabric colors ranging from ivory to light and charcoal blue. The Moore Council Washed Oak Chests are fabulous with a secret door at the top!”

Master Bedroom by Interior Designer Casey Jenkins | SummerHouse

“My favorite wall in this room houses 9 Lauren LaChance botanicals. They bring such a warmth to the space and sense of nature into this serene room! The small slip-covered Lee chairs allow for a small reading area with custom Hodsoll McKenzie embroidered pillows.”

“I so enjoy working with these clients that allow me to present to them what I believe is best for them in their everyday environment. The home’s interior now feels so clean and inviting, just the way we wanted it!”

One Fantastic Nursery, Complete!

31
OCTOBER
2013

A few months ago, we showed you a beautiful presentation of one fantastic nursery by SummerHouse designers Lindsey and Chelsea… Everything about the presentation was perfect, and as we mentioned in that original post, the items in this room were carefully chosen so the space could be every bit as functional as it is pretty.

Now that everything in this room as been installed, we’re happy to be able to share with you the finished product!

Lindsey and Chelsea did an impeccable job of detailing out the room (we love the contrast buttons used on the tufted ottoman!) and making it unique and feminine without it being over-the-top girly.

The client is happy with the result, which is of course, the best outcome of all! We know she and her baby girl will be able to enjoy this peaceful room to the fullest! 🙂

Heaven Is This Guest Room

16
OCTOBER
2013

Lisa recently completed a guest room project that is pretty much perfection…

Heaven is this Guest Room // SummerHouse

Lisa on the project:

“I’ve worked with this client for years so I’m familiar with her style. I kind of had a blank slate in this room.

My client loves a mix of modern and vintage. She also loves white. She owned a bowfront antique chest that had beautiful walnut veneer and also an old gold leaf caned bench. So those were the two vintage pieces. We also added a reproduction bergere that I had painted.”

Bedroom by Lisa Palmer // SummerHouse // Ridgeland, MS

“Everything in the room is airy, light, white, and cream. But the trick in a all white and cream room is mixing textures. Because if you don’t, you get boring. In this space, you’ve got cottons, you’ve got silk, silk velvet, wool and sisal, white resin on the side table, with a little gold leaf… Just lots of texture.”

Bedroom by Lisa Palmer // SummerHouse // Ridgeland, MS

“We also mixed high priced items with lower priced items. We did a high low thing. The fuzzy throw at the end of the bed is from Pottery Barn! And the rug wasn’t expensive. But the silk velvet pillow… That cost a little bit!”
