Meet Sarah Ethridge

Today, I am so excited to introduce y’all to new(ish) Ridgeland team member Sarah Ethridge! Sarah has been with us for several months now and is such a huge help wherever she is needed. We LOVE this girl! If you stop in, you might find her updating our inventory book, helping a designer on a home visit, putting something in CAD, accessorizing the showroom floor, checking in new fabrics, and so many other things! Needless to say, things flow much more smoothly now that Sarah is part of the team 🙂 Get to know this cutie better with a fun Q&A! Meet SummerHouse employee Sarah Ethridge

Can you tell us a little about you? Where you’re from, where you’re in school, what you’re studying, about your family…

I am from Brandon (on the Rez side) and I have lived there my whole life. I graduated from Northwest Rankin High school. I am in school at Mississippi College and I have one year left. I am majoring in Interior Design and have a minor in business. My parents are still in Brandon and I have a sister who is 2 years older than me who has a degree in Graphic Design from Mississippi College. I also have a cat named Carmen that I am very obsessed with.

What’s your favorite local restaurant?

My favorite local restaurant is Saltine. I like it because I can always try something different that I have never had before and no matter what I get there it is always good. (I also get a discount when I eat there because I work at Amerigo and they are owned by the same people, so that is a bonus.)

Is there a particular piece on the showroom floor right now that you’re particularly loving? What do you love about it?

My favorite piece on the showroom floor is the black and gold mirror in the room to the left when you walk in the front door. I just love how simple and classic it looks and its shape makes it look even more beautiful.

7What’s your favorite source of design/style inspiration?

Whenever I am surrounded by creative spaces I feel more imaginative and inspired. Being somewhere new can help whenever you are trying to find some inspiration. Sometimes nature can inspire me and sometimes being in a city can inspire me. I typically get the most inspiration from being in a city environment because there are so many creative things already going on all around me.

How do you take your caffeine?

Every morning I have to have at least a cup of black coffee. I cannot function without having coffee. Sometimes in the middle of the day I will treat myself to a vanilla iced latte, but the majority of the time I just drink black coffee.

What’s the best movie you’ve seen lately and why did you love it?

The last movie I saw in theaters was Mamma Mia 2 and it was great. The scenery in the movie was amazing because it was set in Greece and I thought the costume design was great. This is the kind of movie that makes you want to drop all of your responsibilities and travel the world.

What’s a little known fact about you that makes you different?

Last semester my school did a study abroad program that I got to be a part of, so I got to study in London for a little over 3 months. I really learned a lot about their culture and got to experience so many new things. I also did a lot of traveling while I was over there. I got to go to Scotland, Ireland, Belgium, and Italy, as well as different towns throughout England. It was the best time of my life and I am very grateful that I got to be a part of it because not everyone gets an opportunity like that.

What is your favorite thing to do on a weekend off?

If I ever have a weekend off I am usually traveling somewhere. I might go to visit family or travel somewhere new. Sometimes I will even just go somewhere for the day just to get away and clear my mind.

/ / / / / / / / / /

Thank you so much, Sarah! You are one amazing and inspiring girl, you know it? Thanks for letting us get to know you in a cool new way 🙂

I hope ALL of you get to meet Sarah soon! She’s the cutest.

Y’all have a great week! XOXO from maternity leave,

Laurel 🙂

Meet New Oxford Interior Designer Emily Sanders Taylor

We have a new(ish) face at SummerHouse | Oxford who you just HAVE to meet soon! Newlywed Emily Taylor (well, she’s actually getting married this weekend – congrats, girl!) is so much fun and is SUPER talented. We love having her on the team and are excited for you to get to meet her! Emily and I have actually known each other for years and have worked together on several events and parties. I truly love this girl. She’s incredible, has a fabulous eye for design, and is very hard working. Check out her designer bio here, then get to know her on a more casual level right here, right now… 🙂

Emily Sanders Taylor, Interior Designer at SummerHouse | Oxford Can you tell us a little about you? Where you’re from, where you went to school, about your family, all that good stuff…

I graduated from Ole Miss in 2011 with a degree in Hospitality Management and moved to Jackson to work in the event planning industry. In 2015, I moved to Oxford to pursue my own wedding planning business and, truthfully, a guy. Fortunately, I’m marrying that guy in just a few days!

Can you give us your professional/design history in a nutshell?

My dad was a contractor. As I grew up, we renovated our house several times. I remember laying the hardwood floors in my kitchen in junior high and the sense of pride that came with it, just as an example. Design has always been in the back of my mind.

Is there a particular piece on the showroom floor right now that you’re particularly loving? What do you love about it?

I love our Willow sofa. It is tailored, clean, and could work in so many different spaces. I am also loving our antique wood chest. They each speak to me so much!

If you could visit anywhere in the world for a week, where would it be and why?

France and Italy! We are going for our honeymoon and want to explore off the beaten path a bit so that we can fully experience the culture.

How do you describe your personal design style?

I love “updated traditional.” I like using statement pieces that are timeless and can be paired with your grandmother’s antique chest and a few more trendy accessories. I love for homes to feel cozy and to have many layers of texture.

What’s your favorite source of design/style inspiration?

I look at interior design coffee table books and magazines all day long!! There is a whole stack on my desk.

How do you take your caffeine?

I don’t…. I’m the one crazy person that doesn’t drink coffee or sodas!

What’s a little known fact about you that makes you different?

I’ve owned a wedding planning business for almost 4 years. I feel like this has taught me so much about spatial awareness and functionality. I want all pieces to serve a purpose while looking beautiful.

/ / / / / / / / / /

I can personally speak to Emily’s incredible eye for design. You should have seen the baby shower she planned that we had at my house a few years ago. I just completely let her do everything and rearrange furniture as she needed. Then I left a lot of it where she moved it because I liked it so much better. And I’ve worked in this field since I graduated college eleven years ago! I know y’all will love Emily when you meet her if you haven’t yet. Stop by SHOX as soon as you can and shake her hand! 🙂

Hope all of you have a fantastic week.

Lots of Xs and Os from maternity leave,

Laurel

My Maternity Leave Replacement

Hey there! Laurel here checking in one more time before the chances of me having this baby get super real! If this little baby boy isn’t here before 11/2, he is scheduled to come on that date, so I’m officially playing the waiting game now, hospital bags packed and all!

Emily Simmering at SummerHouseI wanted to introduce y’all to Emily Simmering, the incredible girl who will be filling my shoes while I’m gone for the next couple of months! Emily was one of our interns last summer so she’s familiar with how things function up here, which helps a ton! The staff knows and loves her, so she will be a very welcome addition to the mix for the holiday season! Plus, she is really good at social media so that’s a bonus 😉 If you run into her while visiting the shop, please be sure to say hey! She’s the sweetest.

I’m super comfortable leaving things in her hands as far as all the social channels. Since she’s not quite as familiar with blogging, I’ve taken the liberty of scheduling out several posts over my leave, so my voice will be popping in once a week or so over here with some fun design and other tidbits (like continuing to introduce y’all to the staff who joined our team while this little blog was down for a while!)

I hope y’all have a fantastic day, and please feel free to follow me on my personal channels to see what all I get into on maternity leave! 😉 ( Here is my blog, and here is my Instagram.)

Y’all take care of yourselves! XOXO!

Meet Hathaway McMillon

Hello, friends! I hope you had the best weekend! I wanted to pop in today and introduce you to one of the newest faces here at the SummerHouse so y’all can get to know this new designer just a little bit better! We’ve actually had a few additions to our team (at both locations) since our blog originally went down, so you’ll be meeting several new(ish) people over the coming weeks to make up for the gap!

Today, meet Hathaway. She’s our newest Interior Designer at our Ridgeland shop. She’s been a joy to get to know over the past few weeks, so I know you’ll enjoy getting to know her as well! Let’s get on with the Q&A:Meet Hathaway McMillon

Give us a little bit of background on you please ma’am!

I was born and raised in Columbus, MS. I went to Heritage Academy for High School and University of Mississippi for college. I met my husband Alex at there at Ole Miss, and I will never forget the moment I saw him at a Kappa Delta/ SAE swap!(circa 2003) I have lived in Louisiana and Texas before moving back to Mississippi. Alex and I have a 4 year old daughter named Wimberly! My parents are here in Madison, MS, so we are so excited to be close to family. I have a younger brother named Buck that is in New Orleans so we will be taking lots of road trips to see him now that we are closer.

Can you give us your design history in a nutshell?

I have ten years of interior design experience with commercial and residential design! I have worked on projects all over the United States and loved every minute and every location.

What’s your favorite local restaurant?

This is way too hard to answer, as I have missed real southern food. I always love a good margarita and Mexican food, though.

If you could visit anywhere in the world for a week, where would it be and why?

My next trip will be to the Amalfi Coast. It is a beautiful place.

How do you take your caffeine?

I start my day every morning with a large cup of Starbucks Verona coffee with sugar free vanilla creamer and a Splenda. And I sometimes have a mid day coffee, too! I have not always loved coffee… it was not until after college that I discovered this love! I also love a Diet Coke with lemon or lime

What’s a little known fact about you that makes you different?

I have red hair and I larger than life personality with love for design.

What is your favorite thing to do on a weekend off?

Spend time with my husband Alex and daughter Wimberly! We love to entertain with friends and family. I also love a good bottle of wine with a large assortment of cheeses, a fabulous candle and fresh flowers at all times.

/ / / / / / / / / /

I totally feel you on all of that, Hathaway! Thank you so much for your time! Now all of y’all need to get up to SummerHouse | Ridgeland to meet this fun gal 😉

Stay tuned for more new faces, coming your way soon!

XO,
Laurel

Hello Again!

Hello Again!

Hey, y’all! It’s been a minute since you’ve heard from us over here on Always Summer! Sorry about that… We ran into a minor issue that turned rather major, then ended up having to switch over to a whole new platform and blah, blah, blah, yada, yada, yada…. To make a long story short, WE’RE BACK!

We have also decided to take just a little different direction with the voice of our blog! I, Laurel Donahoo, editor of Always Summer since day one, will have a heavier voice over here and will be talking in the first person much more. Lisa and I hope this adds a bit of personal connection in a fun and different way!

Always Summer Editor, Laurel DonahooTo put a face with a name, this is me. I’m a Mississippi girl in my early 30s, married to my best friend with two kiddos and one on the way. I’m actually due in like a month, so you may notice another gap in posts come early November! Hopefully my maternity leave replacement and I can get some stuff together for y’all over the holidays. We shall see!

Also, this photo is from about a year ago, before I was with child! In case you wondered…

I have been at SummerHouse for 11 years now, so I kiiinda love it up here. Great design is like air to me. I am refreshed when I walk into a beautiful interior (which includes both SummerHouse locations), as great design just has a way of lifting my mood. See, great design is good for the psyche! 😉  I’m constantly inspired by the work that the designers here produce, and I love every single staff member like they were my family! I also have a passion for blogging, so y’all have no idea how thrilled I am to have Always Summer back up and running. I have my own personal blog, too, if you’d like to check that out sometime! 😉

Anyway, I’m so glad we are back up and running and I can’t wait to bring y’all some new, fun content in the coming days! Thanks for getting back on the Always Summer train with me and sharing in the love of all things Interior Design! It’s a pleasure to have you keep up with us over here 🙂

XOXO, Laurel

Meet Jordan Carter!

Meet Jordan Carter // www.alwayssummerblog.comWe have a new face on our design team that we are so excited to introduce to y’all! Meet Jordan Carter, our newest interior design assistant! This girl is smart, organized, and super fun! So naturally, she fits right in up here 😉

We think you’ll enjoy getting to know Jordan as much as we have! Here’s our traditional Q&A with the newbie… 🙂

1. Tell us about yourself!

I feel blessed to have grown up in Daphne, Alabama, on the Eastern Shore of Mobile Bay. I loved growing up on the water and experiencing the scenic Alabama outdoors with family and friends.

I earned my degree in architecture from Auburn University (War Eagle!) and have worked in that field for five years. I recently decided to transition to interior design, and I am excited to begin this new chapter!

My husband and I moved to Jackson last year for his residency at UMMC. We have enjoyed getting acquainted with our new city and making our lovely house a home.

2. Tell us a little about how you became interested in design! Did you always know you loved design, or did you discover your interest some other way?

I have always known that I was interested in design. I remember my father and me touring houses that were under construction and I would tell him all about my design strategies. I would explain what each room would be and show him the way I would lay each room out.

3. What was your first impression of SummerHouse?

My first impression of SummerHouse was the charm. From the sweet southern women to the beautiful design of the showroom floor, I was immediately drawn to it all. To say I am excited to be working at SummerHouse is an understatement!

4. Are you an early bird or a night owl? Feel free to let us in on a snippet of your early bird or night owl routine! 🙂

I feel like I get asked this question a lot and I have decided that I am neither an early bird nor a night owl. I don’t drink coffee (Weird, I know.) so it takes me a little bit of time to wake up in mornings and I don’t like staying up too late. I am more of a middle of the day person so this job is perfect for me!

5. What is your favorite source of visual/design inspiration?

My favorite source of design inspiration is Instagram. A daily source of new, stylish designs are literally at your fingertips. The designers and brands you can follow are endless. I always find myself scrolling through Instagram when I have a minute of time to spare and bookmarking my favorite designs.

6. We’ve noticed you have great style! Where do you like to shop?

My favorite place to shop is in my mother’s closet! She has such great style and has dressed me my entire life. She has spoiled me so much that I don’t even like shopping without her. When I am in need of new clothes, Ann Taylor Loft is a go to since they have petite sizes for my 5’-2” frame.

7. If you could eat anything in the world for supper tonight, what would you eat?!

My favorite meal on earth has to be surf and turf. A filet mignon with a lobster tail on top is mouth watering good. There is nothing better than a meal from the land and sea!

Give Back To Byron

Hello, friends!

We hope all of you had a wonderful weekend! We are starting our Monday off with a bit of a heavy heart for our dear friend Byron Green. Byron, who owns and runs Classic Upholstery, experienced some misfortune last week as his shop burned completely to the ground. He lost everything. Every piece of furniture, every bolt of fabric, every nail gun. EVERYTHING. Byron has been a friend to SummerHouse for a long, long, long time and has done so much beautiful custom work for us. Not only does he do custom reupholstery, but he can build furniture pieces from scratch. And not only is he wildly talented, but he is patient with us. We as designers tend to change our minds from time to time (especially when it comes to a custom piece) and Byron has never once gotten frustrated with any of us. He just laughs, makes a note, and delivers exactly what we ask for.

And we know we aren’t the only designers who work with him. Byron is well known throughout all of Mississippi! He’s simply the best!

Give Back to Byron // alwayssummerblog.com

Bryon is truly a gem, so we want to be there for him during this tough time. We want to give back and help him rebuild his business. Will you help him, too? Please consider donating to the GoFundMe page we started for him. We can’t wait to surprise him with a big ol check! 🙂

Thanks in advance for supporting our friend. Y’all mean so much to us!

Meet New Ridgeland Interior Designer Erin Baker

We are so excited about sharing a fun Q&A with our newest Ridgeland designer Erin Baker today! Erin has been so much fun to have around these past few weeks. Her bright personality fits right in around here! 🙂 Get to know her a little better >>>

Tell us more about you!SummerHouse | Ridgeland Interior Designer Erin Baker // www.alwayssummerblog.com

I am so excited to be working at SummerHouse. I love design and making people’s house into a home they love and enjoy coming home to.

I am from Brookhaven, MS, I attended Brookhaven Academy and Ole Miss for college. I have been in Jackson for almost 8 years now and just recently
bought a house in Madison. I am an only child and I have two pups that I spoil more than I should.:) I love to travel and see new places. I am a runner and love to be outside. If I am not at work or outside doing something, you can find me in the gym, training. It is my stress reliever!

When did you first become interested in interior design? Tell us a little about that realization!

I became interested in design at a very early age. I can remember moving accessories and furniture in my parents house around. I designed my own
bedroom, from paint colors, fabrics, bedding, pillows etc; when i was 12.

Tell us more about your personal design style!

My personal design style is polished casual. I like crisp, clean neutrals, with a surprise of color. Simplicity to me goes a long way. I like classic looks, not trends, and I like to mix textures and metals. My mood has a lot to do with it and what the room is used for. In my house, each room has a different feel/personality.

What is your favorite way to spend a day off?

My favorite way to spend my day off is relaxing with the boyfriend by the water or working on a project around my house.

How do you take your coffee?

I take my coffee with only two splenda….now! I used to be terrible. I would have a little coffee with my cream and sugar. More like syrup!

What’s the best trip you’ve been on recently? Tell us a little more about it!

The most recent trip I have been on was to Miami. I absolutely loved it. The weather was perfect. The food was amazing. But my favorite part about Miami would have to be the architecture and design. The homes are gorgeous. Everything is white and crisp with vibrant pops of color.

What aspect of SummerHouse is your favorite?

My favorite part about SummerHouse is that it feels like home. As soon as you walk in the door, you get that relaxing, ahhh feeling. Everything is beautiful and of the utmost quality. I love having other designers to bounce ideas off of. It is always helpful when you get stuck in a project or just need another point of view. All of the girls here are terrific designers and I am very privileged and excited to have the opportunity to work here.

Thank you, Erin! It’s a privilege to have you as a part of our team!

Q&A With Interior Designer Jenni Hilbun

We are so excited to have Interior Designer Jenni Hilbun join the SummerHouse team in our Oxford location! Jenni is so much fun, is beyond talented, and keeps us laughing! We are thankful to have her as a part of our family. We think you’ll enjoy getting to know her just as much as we have!

SummerHouse | Oxford Interior Designer Jenni Hilbun // www.alwayssummerblog.comCan you tell us a little bit about your background?

I grew up across the south – North Carolina, Georgia, and Mississippi. I spent lots of time with my grandparents in Columbia, MS learning everything from needlepoint (which eventually lead to sewing) to Canasta and of course, spoons!  I finished college at MSU with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Theory. I fueled my creative side with all types of sewing projects and poured through books and magazines learning interior specialty sewing and loving it, often sewing into the wee hours of the morning. This love and ability has grown into a 20 year career in Interior Design.

I live on a farm in Pontotoc County with my husband, Benton, three children, three dogs, one crazy cat, two beautiful horses and five hens! Life is full and rewarding.

At what point did you realize you were interested in interior design?

Pretty early actually. One of my grandmothers always let us cousins decorate her house for Christmas and that was such a treat. She bought whatever “supplies” we wanted and we went to town with it! We even caught her piano on fire one year with a candle! Never even got in trouble, although I’m sure she was clenching her jaw!
She also fostered my love of sewing and fabrics.

If you could travel anywhere in the world for a week, where would you go?

I am really a homebody. I love being at home!

What is the best movie you’ve seen recently? Why’d you like it?

I don’t really go to movies… They’re too loud! But I have been watching The Crown and Reign and loving both. Of course the costumes and drapery details are fantastic.

What’s your favorite local restaurant and why?

I have lots of favorite restaurants because I don’t like to cook. My very favorites are the ones that get a “to go” order correct consistently! And have a pickup lane.

What is your favorite design publication?

This oscillates between Veranda and Traditional Home. Such good publications. I have difficulty parting with back issues.

If Hollywood wanted to make a movie about you, what actress would you want playing you? Why?

Reese Witherspoon because she catches my attention. She is about my size (a.k.a. “short”) and she is already Southern.

Give us the number one reason you’re excited to be a part of the SummerHouse team!

Absolutely because it is a part of a team. Also, positively: Lisa Palmer!

What is your favorite thing about being an interior designer?

My favorite thing about being a designer is helping families and clients fall in love with their home and special keepsakes all over again.

Who is your favorite character on a TV show and why?

Loreli Gilmore. I SO relate!

What else do we need to know about you?

I am part time at SummerHouse and am primarily there on Monday, Thursday, and Friday, but will always make an appointment convenient for my client.

Read more about Jenni and get her contact info here! Thank you so much, Jenni, for your time.   Thrilled to have you aboard!

Meet Chad at SummerHouse | Oxford

We are thrilled to share the news that we have a couple of new designers at SummerHouse | Oxford! Chad Holman and Jenni Hilbun have officially joined the SHOX squad as Interior Designers, and Maddie Ertle (who you may remember from here) has moved on up to an Interior Designer position as well! Laurie Conway is still killing it as an Oxford designer so we just have a really great team going on up there!

Today, we want to introduce you to Chad! We conducted our usual Q&A with him to get to know him a little better. We think you’re going to love him as much as we do!

SummerHouse Oxford Interior Designer Chad Holman // www.alwayssummerblog.comCan you tell us a little bit about your background? Where you grew up, where you went to school, family, etc…?

I spent most of my formative years in Holly Springs MS where I attended Marshall Academy. After Highschool I attended Memphis College of Art. I am married and in the process of fostering 2 girls. The youngest is one and the oldest is two.

At what point did you realize you were interested in interior design? Elaborate just a tad!

I realized I wanted to be an interior designer at a young age. I remember being no older than ten and much to my parents’ dismay rearranging the living room when no one was around. It has always been my passion. I had no choice in the matter. This is the profession I was born to do.

If you could travel anywhere in the world for a week, where would you go? Why?

I have a severe wanderlust for India. I have traveled extensively, and this is one place that I have always wanted to go but never had the chance. I want to explore the cuisine, culture, landscapes, etc… I imagine its streets lined with spice markets, exotic flowers, and gorgeous textiles… Heaven!

What is the best movie you’ve seen recently? Why’d you like it?

The Shape of Water – It was visually stunning!

What’s your favorite local restaurant and why?

It has to be City Grocery. I love it for the shrimp and grits. Why else?

What is your favorite design publication?

I love Architectural Digest and Elle Décor. You will always find these on my coffee table at home. I also love Dwell and Paper magazine. I am always scouring the web for great design blogs. Two of my favorites are Apartment34.com and Yellowtrace.com.au.

Give us the number one reason you’re excited to be a part of the SummerHouse team!

Its reputation! I love being a part of such a talented and established team of designers with a design firm with as many accolades as SummerHouse.

What is your favorite thing about being an interior designer?

I love being able to increase the quality of peoples lives. The spaces we live in are a direct reflection of us. Knowing that I create spaces that give my clients a sense of pride or a beautiful calming place to retreat to after a long day makes me happy. It makes all the long hours and hard work completely worth it.

Who is your favorite character on a TV show OR who is your favorite TV personality and why?

What else do we need to know about you?

I feel that the relationship between designer and client is a close one. We are invited into their homes and is some cases become part of the extended “family”. Because of these relationships I love to put something in every room I design that makes the client laugh or at least brings a smile to their face when they see it. This can be something small and inconspicuous. Most of the time its an inside joke between the client and myself. Many people get caught up in the serious aspects of design. I always try to take the time to step back and remember to have fun. I believe it shows in the finished design.

/ / / / / / / / / /

Thank you so much for your time, Chad! It’s a pleasure having you on board. 🙂

Our Favorite Fall Paint Colors

It’s always fun to round up our design staff members’ favorite paint colors! We love paint colors, and we know you guys do too, so we’re here with another round of beautiful faves! This edition is, of course, FALL themed 🙂

The SummerHouse Designers' Favorite Fall Paint Colors // www.alwayssummerblog.com

When we think of fall, we certainly think about warm taupes, grays, and browns, as well as rich colors like saturated greens, cozy oranges, and deep reds. Our design staff picks hit on all of those inviting fall color families. Let’s see who chose what color(s) and maybe even get a little insight on why these colors speak to them!

Farrow and Ball Studio Green, picked by SH Oxford Interior Designer Rebecca Cornelius.

“I would use Studio Green on anything from kitchen cabinets to a study or even a small bathroom. I would use it with brushed gold hardware pulls or knobs and Kelly Wearstler Tableau Coastal tile in the kitchen, cream moulding in a bathroom and I may even put a natural, loose woven Cowtan and Tout grasscloth over it so the green would show through. In the study, I would place or a Rosecore Vanilla sky rug and cream throw in with natural raw wood accents. Keep it simple but also keep it neutrally and modern textured so it will be visually pleasing and not too dull.”

“This lovely shade of gray, or wait… it’s brown… or maybe it’s ochre. That is precisely why I love it. You really can’t put a name on it. It feels like earth and wintry leaves all rolled into one. I would pair this wall or accent color with possibly a Ralph Lauren wool plaid, a mohair in plum and and a burnt caramel leather. Throw on some logs and candle light and you’ve got a party for two!”

Sherwin Williams Hunt Club, picked by SH Ridgeland Design Assistant Anabel Webb.

“I recently painted my bottom kitchen cabinets with SW Hunt Club, a deep emerald green, and my top cabinets white and its super inviting. I’m still really into the jewel tone movement, which to me, in a way, is very “Fall.”

Benjamin Moore Gray Cashmere, picked by SH Ridgeland Interior Designer Katherine Shelton

“Benjamin Moore Gray Cashmere is such an amazing color to paint any space. This color would work all year long but if you designed your room with warm brown velvets and oatmeal linen paired with Ben Moore Gray Cashmere, your room would feel very cozy for fall and winter.”

Sherwin Williams Spiced Cider, picked by SH Ridgeland Interior Designer Lana Pate

“If someone is fond of a pop of color like I am, Spiced Cider 7702 is a beautiful shade.”

Benjamin Moore Narragansett Green, picked by SH Ridgeland Interior Designer Elish Moon

“I’m very cautious about bold colors, but a study ended up being the perfect opportunity to take a risk! My client and I chose Benjamin Moore’s Narragansett Green HC-157, and this room exudes fall!”

( We actually plan to show y’all more from this study Elish designed, so stay tuned in the coming weeks! )

Meet SummerHouse | Ridgeland Designer Lana Pate

Meet Interior Designer Lana Pate! // www..alwayssummerblog.comWe are so excited to introduce y’all to our newest designer at SummerHouse | Ridgeland! Her name is Lana Pate and she is such a perfect addition to our team. We love this girl, and we think you will too. Get to know her a little better with this quick Q&A!

What got you interested in the Interior Design field?

One of my mother’s best friends was a decorator as I was growing up.  Our families spent a lot of time together.  I loved being around her amazing and never ending energy.  It was impressive watching her make “something” out of “nothing”.  She encouraged me at an early age to pursue my talents and dreams, and she remained a mentor to me throughout my career.

How would you describe your personal taste in design?

My personal taste is much like my personality – colorful!  I decorate my home the same way I advise my clients to design theirs – by surrounding myself with things I love.  I love original art with bold bright colors.  I also have a huge obsession for luxurious fabrics. Velvet being my most favorite!  Did I mention I love gold?  A girl’s got to have a little bling in her world.  My decor is classic with a dose of French and pops of color.

What is your favorite day to spend a day off?

I like to spend my day off by sleeping in then meeting my sister for a delicious lunch at one of our local restaurants.  In the afternoon, I like to go see a movie alone.  It’s a different experience going to the cinema alone versus with family/friends.  When I’m alone, I can completely immerse myself in the story and escape reality for a couple of hours.  I like to end my day with a long hot bath and a good book.

What’s the best movie you’ve seen recently and why?

Since I literally go almost every week, it’s hard to narrow the field.  Though it’s been a few months, The Light Between Oceans had a profound effect on me.  The story and the characters were very complex.  It was an incredibly sad movie (book), but I could sympathize with each character’s plight.  I pretty much cried the entire time.

What is your favorite source of design inspiration?

My go to source has always been magazines such as Veranda, Traditional Home, Architectural Digest, etc.  I think I started subscribing to Traditional Home when I was 13.  But I also enjoy letting art inspire me.  If I hit a “block” on a project, I’ll head to a local art gallery.  It never fails to get my creativity flowing again

How do you take your caffeine?

My daily dose is unsweetened tea.  But my favorite is Dr. Pepper (preferably in a can).  Sadly, I consider those treats these days!

What is your favorite part of being in the Summerhouse family so far?

I’m loving being surrounded by so much creative energy.  I enjoy how everyone just seems to feed off one another.  It’s fun to see others’ projects and design styles.  And it’s nice to have sounding boards sometimes.

Thank you, Lana! Welcome to the SummerHouse fam! 🙂

Meet Our Intern Emily Simmering

Last week you met Katie Coit, our summer intern from Mississippi State University. Today we want you to meet Emily Simmering from Mississippi College! Emily is so much fun! We hope you get the chance to meet her before her stint with us is complete!

Let’s get on to a quick Q&A with her.SummerHouse Interior Design Intern Emily Simmering

Tell us about yourself!

I’m Emily Simmering and I am from Gulf Breeze, FL which is a small town next to Pensacola Beach. I currently go to Mississippi College. I am the youngest of three with an older brother and older sister. My family and I are really close and family is everything to me. I absolutely love art, and painting with watercolor is my favorite.

What made you want to go into Interior Design?

Growing up I always loved art but never thought about interior design until my senior year of high school. That year, my mom and dad bought their dream home but it was an older home and needed to be redone. During that time I was able to see the design process and help with the finish selections and that is when I fell in love with the Interior Design process.

What place in the world have you visited that left you most inspired to design?

A place that has inspired me most in design is actually my hometown. Gulf Breeze is located in between Pensacola and Pensacola Beach, which have two completely different styles. Downtown Pensacola is influenced by the French culture with a lot of exposed brick and restored wood. I love how Gulf Breeze goes from the French influence of Pensacola to the beachy design of Pensacola Beach to everything in between. It is a good showcase of the many different design styles out there.

What Interior Design class has been your favorite and why?

It is hard to determine which class has been my favorite so far… It is between hand rendering or Interior Design Two. Hand rendering really made me think outside the box and let me use my artist background. Interior Design Two focused on residential design and I was able to see the whole process and take a project from beginning to the end. Both were really fun.

Where do you see yourself ten years from now?

I have no idea where I’ll be in ten years but I do know I want to be in residential design. I would love to work with a company like SummerHouse and eventually have my own firm. But I do know I want to be on the coast somewhere! Not positive where just yet, but I know I can’t be away from the beach for too long!

Emily, you are making us want to plan a trip to Gulf Breeze and go back to design school all at once! Thank you so much for sharing! We love having ya around 😉

Meet Our Intern Katie Coit

We are SO lucky up here this summer! Not only do we have one great intern at our Ridgeland shop, but we have two fabulous interns! Emily Simmering and Katie Coit have done an amazing job of getting new project binders organized, getting fabric samples neatly folded, and doing research on upcoming projects among other things!

Today, we want you to meet Katie! This cute girl has been so much fun to get to know, so we want you to get the chance to get to know her too! She might even be along on a home visit or two with some of our designers, so heads up! 🙂

SummerHouse Interior Design Intern Katie CoitTell us a little about yourself!

I grew up in Flowood, MS, and I graduated from Jackson Preparatory School in 2013.  I will be returning to Mississippi State University in the fall to complete my final year in the Interior Design program!

What made you want to go into Interior Design?

When I was growing up, I always loved and appreciated aesthetically pleasing spaces and how they made me feel.  I liked to study buildings and rooms by how they were constructed, designed, decorated, etc. I decided during my senior year of high school that I wanted to pursue a career in Interior Design so that I could create living and work environments that would make people enjoy their surroundings.

What’s your favorite publication to go to for design inspo and why?

I have acquired quite the magazine collection over the years with subscriptions to Veranda, Interior Design Magazine, Architectural Digest, and others. I tear out pages from the magazines that inspire me and put them in a journal I started in high school. I also spend my spare time on Houzz and Pinterest.

How would you describe your personal design style?

My design style is full of neutral colors…. My friends love to comment on the rare occasion where I end up wearing color or selecting something that has color on it (I blame years of shopping at Limited Too when I was younger for my phobia of colors.) I love spaces and pieces that are timeless. I also love for my spaces to be clean and organized. So, I guess you should imagine a white room with timeless furniture and everything in its place, and you would have my style in a nutshell.

What Interior Design class has been your favorite and why?

In our studio class last fall, we were all assigned different countries to research and design a restaurant for.  We had a day where we had to bring in a dish from our country and share with the class what we researched and how it impacted the design of our restaurant. My partner and I were given Japan, and we created a contemporary sushi bar based off of an old castle in Osaka, Japan.

So fun, Katie! No wonder we like you so much 🙂
Stay tuned for an interview with Emily coming soon! And thanks for stopping by today! We hope you had the BEST weekend!

Meet Maddie from SummerHouse | Oxford

We have a new face at SummerHouse | Oxford that we want to introduce to you! Meet Maddie Ertle 🙂 Maddie is a fabulously talented design assistant who fits perfectly with our Oxford team! You’ll want to stop in and say hi next time you’re in the area…

Meet Maddie Ertle at SummerHouse | Oxford Tell us a little bit about yourself!

I am 22 and from St. Louis, MO. My major is Art with emphasis in Graphic Design and I have a double minor in Art History and Italian. I went to an all girls Catholic College Preparatory high school called St. Joseph’s Academy in St. Louis and Ole Miss for undergrad -GO REBS! I am the oldest of 4, 3 girls and 1 boy and my family lives in St. Louis.

When did you realize you were interested in working in design?

I have always (from the minute I could draw) loved art and design and throughout my education have been pushed (in a good way) towards a design career. I worked for a well known designer in St. Louis from 2013-2017, learning all the ways of a registered designer and the tricks of the trade. I knew from the first day of my job with her that I will always pursue my career in design and was absolutely thrilled to be accepted as a new member of the SummerHouse team!

What is your favorite source of design inspiration?

One of my favorite designers to follow is Celerie Kemble and the Domino Design books are my favorite books.

When you have a little free time, what is your favorite way to spend it?!

When I have free time I like to be outdoors, I love to be around animals and I love to paint and draw.

What’s the best movie you’ve seen lately and why?

I haven’t seen many movies I love lately but my favorite movies are The Help and Ratatouille.

Meet Maddie Ertle at SummerHouse | Oxford What is your favorite thing about Oxford?!

My favorite thing about Oxford is how community oriented it is. Everyone who lives here loves to be here and everyone is so happy and nice.

What’s your favorite local restaurant in the Oxford area?

My favorite restaurant in Oxford is probably Boure.

Is there a certain piece on the SHOX showroom floor that you could take home with you right now if the stars were to perfectly align for ya?!

If I could take anything on the floor I would take the Vanguard King bed in Tish Ivory because it is so beautiful and elegant and looks like it is made of clouds.

In your recent years of working in the design world, what has been the most surprising thing you’ve learned about the business/industry of design?

I’m surprised by the business every day and constantly excited to see the new material presented by vendors. I’m blown away by all the amazing designs they can consistently reveal season after season. I just love the interior design field.

What else do we need to know about you?!

What else you need to know about me is I LOVE this company already and everything it has to offer. The people are incredible, so welcoming and so fun to be around, the merchandise is so beautiful and the designers are so talented. I am so blessed to be included!

The best movie I’ve seen so far would have to be The Accountant. My fiancé had to drag me inside and I ended up loving it!

Designer of the Week Katherine Shelton

SummerHouse Designer of the Week Katherine SheltonOur newest Designer of the Week is Katherine Shelton! We love having Katherine as a part of our team. She is such a hard worker and filled with so many great ideas!!

Let’s get on to her Designer of the Week Q&A!

Tell us about a few of your favorite details in a project you’re currently working on!

All of my projects lately, no matter the color palate, seem to have a lot of texture in them. From all of the fabrics to the finishes on the furniture and the accessories as well as the art. And I am Loving it. I LOVE textures!!! They make me very happy!

What is your favorite design trend right now (and why?)

I currently have several favorite design trends. I really like all the carrera marble we are seeing. It seems to be everywhere! Floors in the kitchen and bathrooms, backsplashes and walls. At SummerHouse we have just gotten in some of the cutest picture frames and coasters mixed with carrera marble and wood. Love them! I am also really liking chevron pattern floors… You can lay this pattern with wood, natural stone, or brick. Just makes a small or large space so interesting and can give a room that designer look instantly. Of coarse we want to keep this at a minimum in one home! And lastly, I love all of the brushed gold! It is all the rage. From cabinet hardware and bath fixtures to lamps and chandeliers. And mixing it with grey paint colors and carrera marble is my favorite look. You can also find brushed gold on furniture nail heads and casters and all kinds of accessories come in this finish.

Is there a publication, book, blog, website, magazine that has just really inspired you lately? Tell us about it!

I Love the Atlanta Homes and Lifestyles. It is always so full of fresh ideas. I am also very fond of Atlanta Homes and Lifestyles because I lived Buckhead and truly miss living in in that beautiful city. I hope to one day be able to move back. Everyone drums to their own beat. The homes are all so unique to the personalities of each homeowner. I love all of the creativity and uniqueness shown in this publication each and every time it comes out.

What’s your favorite room in a home to design? Why?

My very favorite space to design in a home is a child’s bedroom. It is where I can be the most creative, the most fun, and the most colorful or bold in pattern play. The look on a child’s face when you reveal the space to them is also so wonderful. Wallpaper or fun paint on the walls, modern mixed with antique or vintage pieces, fun built in play spaces or desk areas, a mixture of original art, photography, and prints and custom bedding and window treatments are just a few important key factors on creating a fabulous baby, child, or teen bedroom.

Designer of the Week Katie Carone

SummerHouse Designer of the Week Katie CaroneOur current designer of the week is our newest designer Katie Carone! She joined our team in April and has been so much fun to have around! We love seeing this mama’s belly grow as she prepares to welcome her first child at the end of this year! We could not be more excited for her!!

We did a fun little Q&A with here so here it is!

What is your favorite design trend right now and why?

I am actually ALL about florals right now!! You’re seeing it in fashion but also in textiles and home decor and I don’t think it’s going to be going away any time soon. I’ve never been a super girly girl, I usually lean more towards edgier looks in fashion as well as decor, but with the florals right now, my softer side is definitely coming out. Not that all florals have to be girly or fussy. I’m actually seeing a good bit of darker versions with jewel tones, blacks and golds which is perfect for Fall, as well as muted more abstract takes on traditional floral prints. I’m loving floral so much, I actually did the accent wall in our daughter’s nursery a beautiful watercolor-esque muted large print floral wallpaper in soft pinks, bieges and grays and my husband and I both absolutely adore it!!

What’s your favorite room in a home to design? Why?

I love designing Master Bedrooms. In our home, its personally my favorite room. I feel like it should be a comfortable, calming space to retreat, relax and enjoy each other’s company after a long day. Whether curled up in a cozy bed with great linens or lounging in a beautiful chair to read a book, I always try to pick soothing color palettes and comfortable fabrics and textures to also make this room a favorite space for my clients.

Tell us about your favorite project to date and what you love about that particular project!

My favorite project to date is definitely our daughter Ava Ryn’s nursery. My husband and I are pregnant with our first child due in December so this has been a complete labor of love, not to mention super fun!! I’ve always loved designing children’s rooms and nurseries, but this one is of course very near and dear to my heart. It’s the first room in our home I have completely designed, as every other room in our home is his, mine and ours. This room is all baby girl and I love it!! I finally feel the satisfaction that I give my clients from their perspective. Although I’m always thrilled when projects are complete, sometimes I feel like I’m as happy as they are with our end result… But now I truly know the joy and excitement I give my clients and its an awesome feeling!

SummerHouse Designer of the Week Katie Carone

Is there a publication, book, blog, website, magazine that has just really inspired you lately? Tell us about it!

I get a lot of inspiration from Atlanta Homes magazine. It’s a great magazine that showcases beautiful home interiors, gardens, and remodels and is extremely current and up to date with the latest trends in interiors.

Designer of the Week: Lindsey Townsend

SummerHouse Interior Designer of the Week Lindsey Townsend Our current Designer of the Week is Lindsey Townsend! This talented, beautiful, hard-working chick keeps us constantly inspired with her amazing projects! We love being able to work alongside Lindsey! Get to know her a little better as a designer in this Q&A!

1 – Tell us about a few of your favorite details in a project you’re currently working on!

I am very excited to be working on a new construction project with a renowned architect. The home is just in its beginning phase and will take about 18 months from start to finish to complete. The architecture and landscape plan is absolutely beautiful. I can’t wait to add my touches to the interior design. The style of the home is French Caribbean. It will be flooded with natural light, beautiful antique beams, oak floors, Limestone fireplaces and oyster Firerock concrete pavers throughout the exterior. I plan to devote much detail and attention to everything in the interior from the cabinetry, ceilings, doors styles, hardware, stone selections, lighting, and color palette throughout.

2 – Is there a publication, book, blog, website, magazine that has just really inspired you lately? Tell us about it!

I have really been inspired lately by Luxe Interiors + Design Magazine. Luxe has a strong focus on the architecture of a home and how it relates to the interior. Which I feel is so important. The interior design of a home should flow seamlessly with the architecture and surroundings of the space. I am in the middle of a few projects I have been working on from the ground up. Luxe has been very helpful with inspiration for new flooring designs and door and cabinetry details, along with wood stains and ceiling details.

SummerHouse Interior Designer of the Week Lindsey Townsend

3 – What’s your favorite room in a home to design? Why?

My favorite space to design in a home would be the Living Room. It is where most of your time is spent with family and entertaining friends. It usually sets the tone for the design of the rest of the home. It is most often the largest space, so I can be creative with furniture layouts, mixing of pieces, layering of textures and color palettes.

4 – Tell us about your favorite project to date and what you love about that particular project!

I am very proud of a new construction home I completed earlier this year. I spent over 2 years on the project. The architect and builder on the project were great. We all worked very well together. It is absolutely imperative to have a good team behind you, that works well together when completing a project of this scope. The home is on the water at Lost Rabbit. The architecture itself was very inspiring. To list just a few features… It is flooded with natural light, beautiful stone and tile selections, unique lighting, an art collection that is to die for, and a 22′ glass Nano Wall that completely opens up to the main level balcony. The clients were absolutely amazing and really committed to my design plan for the entire house. It turned out beautifully and was recently photographed. Should be up on our website very soon!

Thanks so much, Lindsey! Keep up the great work!! 🙂
