A Chat with Artist Charlotte Terrell

Art by Charlotte Terrell at SummerHouse in Ridgeland, MS

Happy almost weekend, friends! I hope you’ve had a great week so far. It was my recent honor to get to chat with new-to-SummerHouse artist Charlotte Terrell about her work and how art has become a part of her life! She was so gracious to share a little bit of her time with us to enlighten us and give us a glimpse behind her lovely work! I hope you enjoy this little chat as much as I did 🙂

LD: Tell us a little about yourself to help us get to know you! Where you’re from, about your family… all that kind of stuff.

CT: I was born and raised in Mississippi in the historic town of Columbus. I was an a great admirer of our handsome pre-civil war homes and gardens, especially Waverly Plantation from which I am direct descendant. There was not much art available to inspire me as a child, but I was enthralled by the multitude of amazing hand painted finishes that adorned Waverly in faux bois and marble. Perhaps this was a foreshadowing of the work I would do a decorative painter and muralist one day?

How long have you been painting?

I was always painting and drawing. As a teen, I turned a walk-in closet to my “studio.” Growing up I took art classes. After high school, I was fortunate to spend a summer in NYC painting at Parsons. My UGA landscape architecture degree required art studies, as well.

Can you tell us about the first painting you sold?

Though I was a professional decorative painter, I had not really painted in fine art in decades. A friend asked me to turn one of my decorative painted finishes in plaster and oils to something on canvas: my first mixed media painting. That was 2008 or so. These paintings caught the eye of a gallery and I was encouraged to do more of these mixed media works. Their exact words were “I think you got something here.” It was thrilling to say the least.

How do you stay inspired? Or what is your go-to source for inspiration?

My love of 19th century landscapes is a never ending source of inspiration. I literally use my eye as landscape designer to to envision these ephemeral landscapes, placing a tree or creating a distant view as I paint.

What would you say sets your work apart?

My technique using polished plaster and layers of oils and oil glazes to create these atmospheric, dream like paintings makes my work so identifiable.

What else do we need to know about you and your work?

I practiced as a landscape architect for NYC parks for fifteen years, while developing my skills as a muralist and decorative painter. These two passions have merged magically into my artwork. I am both fortunate and grateful to be doing this as a professional full time painter, something I would never have envisioned for myself. Yet, it is like a hand in a glove.

Charlotte, thank you so much for your time!

I hope you enjoyed getting to know about Charlotte’s background as much as I did. Her work is truly stunning! Stop into SummerHouse Ridgeland to see these works in person. You’ll be blown away!

As always, thanks so much for stopping in today. It’s always nice to have your company 🙂 XO! Laurel

Update at Arco

Arco Avenue in Ridgeland, MS // Interior Design by Elish Moon

Today I wanted to share some photos of the freshly updated Arco Avenue with you and I am particularly excited about it for multiple reasons!

(1) The owner of Arco Avenue is my sister-in-law Katie! 🙂 She’s the cutest!

(2) Arco Avenue is one of my top five most favorite stores in all of the world. I have large feet and they special order shoes for me and I just love them! (They also have normal size shoes for those of you with normal feet!)

(3) I got to take these pictures, giving me the opportunity to hone my skillz with my semi new camera!

(4) Elish is a design wizard and she and Katie work so well together that it’s truly magical (hence my use of the word wizard.) Side note: Elish helped Katie several years back when Arco underwent a pretty huge facelift, so this Arco update is a piggyback update on what they did together about five years ago!

Let’s get on with some pictures (you can check out the updated project page on our design site here!) then I’ll let Elish give you a little more insight into the design!

I asked Elish to tell us a bit about the behind-the-design-scenes and I love what she had to share!

“Katie, the owner of Arco Avenue (and its cute neighbor Row 10), came into Summerhouse one day and pointed out a fun lounger on our floor and said she’d love to use something like it to incorporate more seating into Arco. Katie’s ideas for her store are always on point, from a design direction and from a retail perspective. She’s consistent in what she’s drawn to and it’s always a piece that is also investing in the draw of Arco Avenue, so thankfully I never have to second guess anything on that front.”

“She fell in love with a gorgeous white sherpa material that actually happened to be durable and easy to clean! As I worked on incorporating the loungers into the layout, we realized we needed to do a bit of rearranging, and update the rug to fit our new configuration. I also suggested adding two potted fiddle leaf figs. It fit the aesthetic of her store and also livened up the space and brings the outside in with some greenery.”

“These new updates went hand in hand with a mini in store makeover with added shelving and display space to celebrate Arco’s eight year anniversary. Katie is truly the best to work with and I’m proud to say I get a front row seat as she grows her business and continues make it more and more successful!”

And that’s a wrap! Kudos to Katie for her fantastic vision, Elish for expanding and executing the design vision, and YOU for reading!

I hope you have a fantastic day today. Thanks so much for stopping by! And if you are in need of new shoes, please be sure to check out Arco Avenue. They have a great online shop and ship for free.

Kimberly Moore Art

Kimberly Moore Art at SummerHouse

I am thrilled to share with you that we are now carrying the art of a fabulously talented artist, Kimberly Moore! All of us up here love her style and her eye, and we are honored to have her work adorning our Ridgeland showroom.

Let’s get to know Kimberly a bit better together, shall we?!

Laurel: Can you give us an overview of Kimberly in a nutshell! 🙂

Kimberly: I am married and have 3 children and a new grandchild! I grew up in South Florida, lived 18 years in Atlanta in my early 20s, then moved back to South Florida where I am now.

Laurel: Beautiful! South Florida is so pretty. So how would you describe your artistic style?

Kimberly: I would describe my style as abstract expressionism. I am heavily influenced by ancient Greek and Roman civilization and painters from the 1940s and 1950s.

Laurel: How cool! Now, I know from reading your About page that you draw from life experiences when you’re crafting your art. Can you tell us about a specific life experience and how it inspired a specific piece?

Kimberly: Sure! One of my favorite paintings came as a result of the impression left on me after I visited Pompeii. It was a profound experience for me and I find that images and markings rise to the surface of my conscience as I am painting based on such experiences.

Laurel: Very neat. I love that! I also read that you are open to doing commissioned pieces. Can you tell us about one of the most unique or commission requests you’ve ever received?!

Kimberly: I received a commission from a wonderful couple, one an interior designer and the other a graphic designer. Throughout the commission process I would send previews which they would critique with such incredible depth and understanding that they actually gave me a beautiful gift in allowing me to view and see my work in an objective way. I will be forever grateful to Keith and Jason!

Laurel: What a lovely way of viewing such process! I love that attitude, and I know you learned so much. Now let’s move on to how you finish these pieces… I notice that many of the frames used on your collage and ink pieces (and possibly some of your larger abstracts?!) appear to be vintage or found. Can you tell us about the significance of your framing?

Kimberly: I spend early weekend mornings scouring Estate Sales and Flea Markets looking for vintage frames. It is a leftover habit from my antiquing days. I have never lost the thrill of the hunt! I let the frame dictate the style of art I think is appropriate.

Laurel: Well they are perfect and just give an extra element of uniqueness to your work. Now, what else do we need to know about Kimberly Moore Art? 🙂

Kimberly: I spent the majority of my career in the Antique business and also was an Appraiser of Antiques and Vintage Goods which has definitely honed by eye. I am OBSESSED with Interior Design! I painted as long as I can remember but always for myself. I had been regularly doing the Scott Antique Show in Atlanta and my husband encouraged me to put a few of my paintings out for sale. I was so unsure of myself in the beginning that I signed my work ‘Lillian Howell’ which is my Grandmothers maiden name. (She is 97 and was thrilled to be known as an “artist”). My art was purchased by a number of very well known designers so I was encouraged to keep painting. I am so thrilled that people seem drawn to my art and now I paint full time (and sign my own name!)

Laurel: As you should! It’s absolutely stunning. I hope to have a piece of my own one of these days! 🙂 Well, I think that about wraps us up here. Thank you so much for your time, Kimberly. We love your work!!

A Local Love Affair with Leontine Linens

A Local Love Affair with Leontine Linens // Lee Loves Local party at SummerHouse

Hi, friend 🙂 How are ya?

We’ve got some pretty gross weather in Mississippi this week (and sadly I think it’s supposed to stay gross through Saturday) but to reverse those blues that the weather is trying to dish out, I have some pretty pictures to share with you!

Both SummerHouse locations celebrated #LeeLovesLocal week last week with some lovely parties. I didn’t get to make it to the Oxford party, but I’ve heard reports that it was nothing short of perfect! The Ridgeland party, too, was basically perfect. We had the most stunning bedding and table linens of all time gracing our showroom floor. Leontine Linens, you are one amazing company!

Here’s a pictorial recap of our Ridgeland par-tay

Are you as taken with Leontine as we are?

Kitchen Renovation: Before & After

Before and After: A kitchen renovation by Interior Designer Katy Hines

Hey, y’all! I hope your week is off to a fantastic start! Mine sure is, due in large part to this blog post! I spent part of the day editing these photos and they just make me so happy. SummerHouse Designer Katy Sanders did a beautiful job renovating this kitchen for some clients and the results are just astounding!

Here’s what Katy was working with:

Before and After: A kitchen renovation by Interior Designer Katy Hines

This kitchen had not been updated since this house was built almost 20 years ago. The clients were open to doing whatever needed to be done to fully update it, so as you can see in the above photo, Katy fully gutted it. They moved the gas line so the cook top could go in between the windows to create a focal point. Before, there had not really been a nice place for the eye to fall, so moving that, adding the vent-a-hood, and running the backsplash all the way up to the ceiling created just that!

Before and After: A kitchen renovation by Interior Designer Katy Sanders

The island was a bit dated, so Katy straightened that up and got it looking extra fab with some cleaner lines and cute barstools. She redid all the lighting, redesigned all the cabinetry, and added wood flooring throughout to create a little warmth. She selected those beautiful Quartzite countertops and proved that mixing metal finishes can be beautiful when done correctly (ahem, like when you hire a SummerHouse designer!)

Because paint colors are always such a hot topic, I’ll go ahead and answer the question that I know many of you have in your head (because I asked it in my head, too!) Benjamin Moore Hale Navy on the paint color Katy used on the island 😉

Before and After: A kitchen renovation by Interior Designer Katy Sanders

Before and After: A kitchen renovation by Interior Designer Katy Sanders

Before and After: A kitchen renovation by Interior Designer Katy Sanders

Before and After: A kitchen renovation by Interior Designer Katy Sanders

After Katy’s magic touch, this kitchen functions better, has been brought into the current decade, and is so stunning that it made its way onto a design blog! 😉 Beautiful work, Katy Sanders. You never cease to amaze us.

Thanks so much for stopping by Always Summer! Stay warm out there 🙂

Newness

Hey y’all, and happy Monday! After a two month maternity leave getting in all the snuggles with my new little dude (who we named Dempsey — he is amazing!), I’m back in the saddle up here at SummerHouse! When I walked into work this morning, the whole showroom looked brand new to me since I haven’t been here in, well, two months! I walked around picking out new favorites and just thinking (remembering) how refreshing that SummerHouse style is 🙂 Here are a few shots of pretty happenings on the showroom that I highly recommend you come and look at for yourself!

Meet Hathaway McMillon

Hello, friends! I hope you had the best weekend! I wanted to pop in today and introduce you to one of the newest faces here at the SummerHouse so y’all can get to know this new designer just a little bit better! We’ve actually had a few additions to our team (at both locations) since our blog originally went down, so you’ll be meeting several new(ish) people over the coming weeks to make up for the gap!

Today, meet Hathaway. She’s our newest Interior Designer at our Ridgeland shop. She’s been a joy to get to know over the past few weeks, so I know you’ll enjoy getting to know her as well! Let’s get on with the Q&A:Meet Hathaway McMillon

Give us a little bit of background on you please ma’am!

I was born and raised in Columbus, MS. I went to Heritage Academy for High School and University of Mississippi for college. I met my husband Alex at there at Ole Miss, and I will never forget the moment I saw him at a Kappa Delta/ SAE swap!(circa 2003) I have lived in Louisiana and Texas before moving back to Mississippi. Alex and I have a 4 year old daughter named Wimberly! My parents are here in Madison, MS, so we are so excited to be close to family. I have a younger brother named Buck that is in New Orleans so we will be taking lots of road trips to see him now that we are closer.

Can you give us your design history in a nutshell?

I have ten years of interior design experience with commercial and residential design! I have worked on projects all over the United States and loved every minute and every location.

What’s your favorite local restaurant?

This is way too hard to answer, as I have missed real southern food. I always love a good margarita and Mexican food, though.

If you could visit anywhere in the world for a week, where would it be and why?

My next trip will be to the Amalfi Coast. It is a beautiful place.

How do you take your caffeine?

I start my day every morning with a large cup of Starbucks Verona coffee with sugar free vanilla creamer and a Splenda. And I sometimes have a mid day coffee, too! I have not always loved coffee… it was not until after college that I discovered this love! I also love a Diet Coke with lemon or lime

What’s a little known fact about you that makes you different?

I have red hair and I larger than life personality with love for design.

What is your favorite thing to do on a weekend off?

Spend time with my husband Alex and daughter Wimberly! We love to entertain with friends and family. I also love a good bottle of wine with a large assortment of cheeses, a fabulous candle and fresh flowers at all times.

/ / / / / / / / / /

I totally feel you on all of that, Hathaway! Thank you so much for your time! Now all of y’all need to get up to SummerHouse | Ridgeland to meet this fun gal 😉

Stay tuned for more new faces, coming your way soon!

XO,
Laurel

Meet Jordan Carter!

Meet Jordan Carter // www.alwayssummerblog.comWe have a new face on our design team that we are so excited to introduce to y’all! Meet Jordan Carter, our newest interior design assistant! This girl is smart, organized, and super fun! So naturally, she fits right in up here 😉

We think you’ll enjoy getting to know Jordan as much as we have! Here’s our traditional Q&A with the newbie… 🙂

1. Tell us about yourself!

I feel blessed to have grown up in Daphne, Alabama, on the Eastern Shore of Mobile Bay. I loved growing up on the water and experiencing the scenic Alabama outdoors with family and friends.

I earned my degree in architecture from Auburn University (War Eagle!) and have worked in that field for five years. I recently decided to transition to interior design, and I am excited to begin this new chapter!

My husband and I moved to Jackson last year for his residency at UMMC. We have enjoyed getting acquainted with our new city and making our lovely house a home.

2. Tell us a little about how you became interested in design! Did you always know you loved design, or did you discover your interest some other way?

I have always known that I was interested in design. I remember my father and me touring houses that were under construction and I would tell him all about my design strategies. I would explain what each room would be and show him the way I would lay each room out.

3. What was your first impression of SummerHouse?

My first impression of SummerHouse was the charm. From the sweet southern women to the beautiful design of the showroom floor, I was immediately drawn to it all. To say I am excited to be working at SummerHouse is an understatement!

4. Are you an early bird or a night owl? Feel free to let us in on a snippet of your early bird or night owl routine! 🙂

I feel like I get asked this question a lot and I have decided that I am neither an early bird nor a night owl. I don’t drink coffee (Weird, I know.) so it takes me a little bit of time to wake up in mornings and I don’t like staying up too late. I am more of a middle of the day person so this job is perfect for me!

5. What is your favorite source of visual/design inspiration?

My favorite source of design inspiration is Instagram. A daily source of new, stylish designs are literally at your fingertips. The designers and brands you can follow are endless. I always find myself scrolling through Instagram when I have a minute of time to spare and bookmarking my favorite designs.

6. We’ve noticed you have great style! Where do you like to shop?

My favorite place to shop is in my mother’s closet! She has such great style and has dressed me my entire life. She has spoiled me so much that I don’t even like shopping without her. When I am in need of new clothes, Ann Taylor Loft is a go to since they have petite sizes for my 5’-2” frame.

7. If you could eat anything in the world for supper tonight, what would you eat?!

My favorite meal on earth has to be surf and turf. A filet mignon with a lobster tail on top is mouth watering good. There is nothing better than a meal from the land and sea!

Meet New Ridgeland Interior Designer Erin Baker

We are so excited about sharing a fun Q&A with our newest Ridgeland designer Erin Baker today! Erin has been so much fun to have around these past few weeks. Her bright personality fits right in around here! 🙂 Get to know her a little better >>>

Tell us more about you!SummerHouse | Ridgeland Interior Designer Erin Baker // www.alwayssummerblog.com

I am so excited to be working at SummerHouse. I love design and making people’s house into a home they love and enjoy coming home to.

I am from Brookhaven, MS, I attended Brookhaven Academy and Ole Miss for college. I have been in Jackson for almost 8 years now and just recently
bought a house in Madison. I am an only child and I have two pups that I spoil more than I should.:) I love to travel and see new places. I am a runner and love to be outside. If I am not at work or outside doing something, you can find me in the gym, training. It is my stress reliever!

When did you first become interested in interior design? Tell us a little about that realization!

I became interested in design at a very early age. I can remember moving accessories and furniture in my parents house around. I designed my own
bedroom, from paint colors, fabrics, bedding, pillows etc; when i was 12.

Tell us more about your personal design style!

My personal design style is polished casual. I like crisp, clean neutrals, with a surprise of color. Simplicity to me goes a long way. I like classic looks, not trends, and I like to mix textures and metals. My mood has a lot to do with it and what the room is used for. In my house, each room has a different feel/personality.

What is your favorite way to spend a day off?

My favorite way to spend my day off is relaxing with the boyfriend by the water or working on a project around my house.

How do you take your coffee?

I take my coffee with only two splenda….now! I used to be terrible. I would have a little coffee with my cream and sugar. More like syrup!

What’s the best trip you’ve been on recently? Tell us a little more about it!

The most recent trip I have been on was to Miami. I absolutely loved it. The weather was perfect. The food was amazing. But my favorite part about Miami would have to be the architecture and design. The homes are gorgeous. Everything is white and crisp with vibrant pops of color.

What aspect of SummerHouse is your favorite?

My favorite part about SummerHouse is that it feels like home. As soon as you walk in the door, you get that relaxing, ahhh feeling. Everything is beautiful and of the utmost quality. I love having other designers to bounce ideas off of. It is always helpful when you get stuck in a project or just need another point of view. All of the girls here are terrific designers and I am very privileged and excited to have the opportunity to work here.

/ / / / / / / / / /

Thank you, Erin! It’s a privilege to have you as a part of our team!

Meet Elizabeth at SummerHouse | Ridgeland

Meet our new Fabric Librarian, Elizabeth! // www.alwayssummerblog.com

We have a new face at the Ridgeland shop that you definitely need to get to know! We have loved having Elizabeth Fowlkes on our team and you are going to love her, too! Her bright spirit and happy disposition is just so inspiring!

Elizabeth is our part time fabric librarian during the week (she comes in after her “day job”) and is our receptionist on Saturdays. As per our usual, we did a get-to-know-her Q&A, so here it is!

Tell us a little about yourself!Meet our new Fabric Librarian, Elizabeth! // www.alwayssummerblog.com

I am originally from Oxford, MS. I graduated from Oxford High School and completed my Bachelor’s degree in Communication at Auburn University. War Eagle!  I came back to Ole Miss for graduate school, where I studied School Counseling.  I have been in Jackson for the past two years and I work as a School Counselor at Goodloe Elementary School in Canton.  I have a younger sister, Katherine, who just graduated from Ole Miss and lives in Lubbock, TX.  My parents live in Oxford and I go back to visit as often as I can!

Tell us a bit about your “day job” and what you like about it!

I work as an elementary school counselor during the day and I absolutely love it!!  I love to explore the world through the eyes of children.  I love that my job involves painting, coloring, and puppet shows!  I learn so much from my students. We just finished celebrating “The Great Kindness Challenge” and collected over 900 canned goods for a local food bank, which was all their idea!

What do you like to do on a lazy weekend?

I love to get a pedicure, clean my house, sit on the couch with a good book, and binge watch Friends!

What was your first impression of SummerHouse?!

I fell in love with SummerHouse instantly.  I dream about having a “SummerHouse house.” Everything in the store is so crisp and clean, and every space is beautiful.

Tell us something you’ve learned from your short time at SummerHouse thus far! 🙂

As a counselor I am all about relationships. I can tell that relationships are also very important to the SummerHouse staff also…. relationships with each other and with every customer who walks through the door. That is very special. The coffee is great, too!

What are your currently reading? Do you like it?

I have read three of Liane Moriarty’s books since Christmas and I couldn’t put them down! I loved Big Little Lies, The Husband’s Secret, and Truly Madly Guilty.

What’s your favorite social media platform and why?

I love Instagram….I love to see where everyone is traveling, eating, shopping, etc.

What is your favorite meal in the whole wide world? Tell us a little about it, where it’s from or who cooks it, and why you love it!

My mom’s Chicken Spaghetti! I could eat it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner forever.  It reminds me of growing up and it’s one of the only things I know how to make well!

Favorite magazine or source for inspiration? Why?

I love Southern Living! You can find the answer for anything and everything.

What else do we need to know about you?!

I am so excited to be a part of the SummerHouse team!

Thank you so much, Elizabeth! We are thrilled to have ya here 🙂 Thanks for all you have done so far!

Meet Our Intern Emily Simmering

Last week you met Katie Coit, our summer intern from Mississippi State University. Today we want you to meet Emily Simmering from Mississippi College! Emily is so much fun! We hope you get the chance to meet her before her stint with us is complete!

Let’s get on to a quick Q&A with her.SummerHouse Interior Design Intern Emily Simmering

Tell us about yourself!

I’m Emily Simmering and I am from Gulf Breeze, FL which is a small town next to Pensacola Beach. I currently go to Mississippi College. I am the youngest of three with an older brother and older sister. My family and I are really close and family is everything to me. I absolutely love art, and painting with watercolor is my favorite.

What made you want to go into Interior Design?

Growing up I always loved art but never thought about interior design until my senior year of high school. That year, my mom and dad bought their dream home but it was an older home and needed to be redone. During that time I was able to see the design process and help with the finish selections and that is when I fell in love with the Interior Design process.

What place in the world have you visited that left you most inspired to design?

A place that has inspired me most in design is actually my hometown. Gulf Breeze is located in between Pensacola and Pensacola Beach, which have two completely different styles. Downtown Pensacola is influenced by the French culture with a lot of exposed brick and restored wood. I love how Gulf Breeze goes from the French influence of Pensacola to the beachy design of Pensacola Beach to everything in between. It is a good showcase of the many different design styles out there.

What Interior Design class has been your favorite and why?

It is hard to determine which class has been my favorite so far… It is between hand rendering or Interior Design Two. Hand rendering really made me think outside the box and let me use my artist background. Interior Design Two focused on residential design and I was able to see the whole process and take a project from beginning to the end. Both were really fun.

Where do you see yourself ten years from now?

I have no idea where I’ll be in ten years but I do know I want to be in residential design. I would love to work with a company like SummerHouse and eventually have my own firm. But I do know I want to be on the coast somewhere! Not positive where just yet, but I know I can’t be away from the beach for too long!

Emily, you are making us want to plan a trip to Gulf Breeze and go back to design school all at once! Thank you so much for sharing! We love having ya around 😉

Meet Our Intern Katie Coit

We are SO lucky up here this summer! Not only do we have one great intern at our Ridgeland shop, but we have two fabulous interns! Emily Simmering and Katie Coit have done an amazing job of getting new project binders organized, getting fabric samples neatly folded, and doing research on upcoming projects among other things!

Today, we want you to meet Katie! This cute girl has been so much fun to get to know, so we want you to get the chance to get to know her too! She might even be along on a home visit or two with some of our designers, so heads up! 🙂

SummerHouse Interior Design Intern Katie CoitTell us a little about yourself!

I grew up in Flowood, MS, and I graduated from Jackson Preparatory School in 2013.  I will be returning to Mississippi State University in the fall to complete my final year in the Interior Design program!

What made you want to go into Interior Design?

When I was growing up, I always loved and appreciated aesthetically pleasing spaces and how they made me feel.  I liked to study buildings and rooms by how they were constructed, designed, decorated, etc. I decided during my senior year of high school that I wanted to pursue a career in Interior Design so that I could create living and work environments that would make people enjoy their surroundings.

What’s your favorite publication to go to for design inspo and why?

I have acquired quite the magazine collection over the years with subscriptions to Veranda, Interior Design Magazine, Architectural Digest, and others. I tear out pages from the magazines that inspire me and put them in a journal I started in high school. I also spend my spare time on Houzz and Pinterest.

How would you describe your personal design style?

My design style is full of neutral colors…. My friends love to comment on the rare occasion where I end up wearing color or selecting something that has color on it (I blame years of shopping at Limited Too when I was younger for my phobia of colors.) I love spaces and pieces that are timeless. I also love for my spaces to be clean and organized. So, I guess you should imagine a white room with timeless furniture and everything in its place, and you would have my style in a nutshell.

What Interior Design class has been your favorite and why?

In our studio class last fall, we were all assigned different countries to research and design a restaurant for.  We had a day where we had to bring in a dish from our country and share with the class what we researched and how it impacted the design of our restaurant. My partner and I were given Japan, and we created a contemporary sushi bar based off of an old castle in Osaka, Japan.

So fun, Katie! No wonder we like you so much 🙂
Stay tuned for an interview with Emily coming soon! And thanks for stopping by today! We hope you had the BEST weekend!

Q&A With April Shelby Crowell

April Shelby Crowell of A. Shelby Pottery via alwayssummerblog.com

As you might have noticed from social media and from our web store, we have a new local potter represented at SummerHouse and we are EXCITED!

Our friend April Shelby Crowell, the mastermind behind A. Shelby Pottery, was kind enough to take the time to answer a few questions for us so we could all get to know her better! Lisa and Marty fell in love with her pottery at our Lee Loves Local event (along with Traditional Home Magazine, in which she was just featured!) and it’s been true love ever since. Let’s get on with our chat with April!

April Shelby Crowell of A. Shelby Pottery via alwayssummerblog.comTell us a little about yourself, please ma’am!

I grew up in Florence, MS with my parents and older brother. I’m really fond of that small town childhood!  I’ve always had a passion for the arts and my parents have always been super supportive of that. Now I live in Flowood with my husband, Jon Richard. He is the best encourager, and his let’s-make-it-happen attitude is one of my biggest inspirations. And we’re pretty obsessed with our dog, Potter. Yes, we named him after my profession!

How long have you been creating pottery?

I took my first pottery class in the first semester of my freshman year of college (2008), and seriously I was in love with it before class even started! I continued to take pottery classes all throughout college, graduated from Miss. State University in 2013 with a BFA, emphasis in ceramics, and have been making pottery on my own ever since!

April Shelby Crowell of A. Shelby Pottery via alwayssummerblog.comWhat inspires your style? It’s so fun and different!

That’s a tough one because I’m inspired by so much.  Specifically, this Gold Collection came to life from my love for handmade, functional objects mixed with the simple, chic style I admire in interior design and home decor.  I feel like in our area when people think “pottery” they think “country” or “rustic.” While I do admire and appreciate that look, it just isn’t my personal style.  So I started to create these minimalist forms using a monotone color scheme. Even though I am my own worst critic, I really liked the pottery I was making so I just rolled with it!

April Shelby Crowell of A. Shelby Pottery via alwayssummerblog.comWhat is your favorite thing about creating pottery?

Again, so many inspirations and so many reasons why. I just love the whole process of working with my hands to make stuff. Anything, really! I just stick with clay most of the time! It’s crafty and challenging. Pottery is a long process so when products are finally complete it’s really quite satisfying!

What else do we need to know about you and your pottery?!

Recently someone told me, “I see your pottery when I walk into my living room and it just makes me so happy.” I don’t say that to sound boastful, I say it because that’s one of the many reasons I love doing what I do.  If my pottery makes someone happy then I’m happy too.  When you purchase a piece of A. Shelby Pottery you’re not just picking up any ordinary object off the shelf, you’re getting a piece of art that is very special to me because a lot of time and craftsmanship goes into each piece. I hope you enjoy my pottery just as much as I enjoy making it for you!

Thank you so much, April! Your work is inspiring and we are honored to carry it 🙂

Be sure to stop by either SummerHouse location to shop April’s work, or you can check some of it out on our web store!

We hope you’re having a great week!
