We recently got the opportunity to chat with local artist Carol Sneed about her work, her family, her inspirations, and how she got into art in the first place! Keep reading to find out more about this talented woman whose work we could not adore any more!
Can you tell us a little about yourself? Where you’re from, about your family, how you like to spend a lazy weekend…
I am from Canton, MS. I met my husband, Bill, at Ole Miss, and we married after his first year of Medical School. After my graduation from The University of MS with a Bachelor of Arts degree, and later earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at The University of Houston in design, I practiced Interior Design in Jackson, MS.
We have one daughter, Katherine, who is married to Hunter Worley, and they live in Birmingham, AL.
On a lazy weekend, believe it or not, I like to get some painting in. It is therapy- sometimes, that is! I also like to read & practice sketching. If I am in the mountains where the summer weather is cool, I like to hike or bike.
How long have you been painting, and what got you into painting?
Well, my mother’s favorite piece from the fourth grade, a crayon & watercolor, entitled “Cotton Picking” still adorns her walls. My teacher entered it in an art contest and it won first place.
I have been designing and painting a good deal of my life. At Ole Miss, I took art electives for fun. After Ole Miss graduation, I studied painting from a local instructor for fun. My fine Arts degree included every form of art. After retiring from Interior Design, I knew I had to focus my artistic energy in some direction, and painting was a natural creative outlet. I began sketching and painting seriously in 1999.
How do you describe your style?
That is a hard question! It may not have a name. ha! My goal, however, is to take what is complex and paint it simply. When painting abstractly and experimenting with different color combinations, I try to keep the composition fresh, spontaneous, and appearing effortless.
What do you most enjoy about creating art?
I love an eclectic mix. I enjoy creating art that is very much at home with antiques as well as contemporary pieces. I am always keeping “art for interior design” in mind, and I paint the types of pieces that I searched for to place in client’s spaces.
What would you say inspires you most as an artist?
I love the inspiration I receive through travel- to drink it all in. There is nothing like being there to capture the essence of the place. My city scenes and Aspen landscapes are drawn as much from memory as through photo references and sketches. Matisse, Cézanne, Bonnard, and Monet are just a few of my current influences.
I am especially fascinated by nature as a whole, the most awesome masterpiece of all, created by the only perfect artist.
What else do we need to know about you?!
Every day is a gift, and I am thankful for the opportunity to do something I enjoy- and hopefully bring pleasure to other people.
