Hey y’all,

It’s me, Laurel. Your friendly neighborhood blogger and SummerHouse family member for over 12 years now! I’m not real sure how to get this post going, so I’ll just start at the beginning!

The very beginning of my time at SummerHouse!

In the summer of 2007, right after I graduated from college, Lisa hired me to be the maternity leave replacement for KC, our receptionist at the time. Instead of just twiddling my thumbs waiting on KC to have her baby, Lisa let me come on in and play “fabric librarian” for the weeks leading up to KC having her baby! I had a blast that summer learning all about retail + design under the SummerHouse roof and getting to know everyone up here!

Right when KC came back from maternity leave, I jetted off to England for about four months to do the post-grad “living abroad” thing with a friend. The day before I flew home, I had an email from Lisa asking if I wanted to be her assistant! Of course I said YES!!!

I was her assistant for about four years, working on quite the range of projects and learning more about design than I ever dreamed, til going part time in 2012 to just do social media. I worked mostly remotely, but realized that (1) I loved being around my co-workers when I was physically in the store, and (2) my content was higher quality when produced from the store because I had a better finger on the pulse of the business, so back to the store I moved! I’ve been part time ever since then, and have really loved coming in all these years!

I’ve had the opportunity to help plan some really awesome parties, photograph some stunning homes, go on road trips with my co-workers, celebrate tons of milestones with the people up here, and just learn so much about life from the diverse group of amazing people who have worked here.

Which is what makes this next part SO hard.

I’ve continued my gig up here through dating my husband, getting engaged, planning a wedding, getting married, having a miscarriage, then having three beautiful healthy babies. My SummerHouse family has been by my side through it ALL. And I’ve had the incredible opportunity to be a shoulder and a cheerleader for my friends up here during their life ups and downs, too.

Although it has gotten progressively harder to be the wife and mom I need and want to be AND the employee I need and want to be, it’s been manageable.

Until recently. As some of you might know, my youngest son Dempsey was born completely deaf. We don’t really know why, but it is what it is. And of course we adore every single fiber of his being! We know God made himย the way he did for a reason. But the time has come where I felt like I needed to really take a step back with work in order to be fully present for my family during this unusual season for us.

Dempsey has a surgery scheduled for August 22 to get bilateral cochlear implants, about which we are THRILLED! Isn’t modern medicine and science just such a blessing?! My baby will be able to hear for the first time when he gets “activated” on September 24th, about a month after his surgery. (The August surgery is for him to get his internal processors implanted into his little ears, then after a month of healing, his external processors will get turned on!)

We are taking part in a study with our hospital and our implant company, which will require some extra work, but of course we are thrilled that Dempsey will be getting seen super often by his fabulous team of doctors. We plan to start sending him to Magnolia Speech School as soon as we can, so I’ll be tearing up the roads here soon driving my kids all over creation! ๐Ÿ˜‰

If you came to MayMod, you supported Magnolia Speech School in Dempsey’s honor. Thank you again for that!!!!

But all that to say, I don’t feel like I’m able to give everything I want and need to give to both family and to SummerHouse. And of course my family wins. And of course Lisa was SO understanding and sweet when I told her I had to step away. Because she’s just the best boss ever.

BECAUSE OF ALL THIS, I am thrilled to share that we found, not one, but TWO girls who will come in and take over my position! These girls are smart, talented, super cute, and have so many great ideas to take the SummerHouse brand to the next level. I could not be more excited about watching these girls do their thing! It’ll be a pleasure to sit back and watch them run.

And don’t worry, Lisa says she’s still gonna hire me for a little event planning here and there, so I’ll still be around ๐Ÿ˜‰ Plus, after 12 years of working here, I’m gonna have to stop in often to get my home style fix. I’m spoiled by the most beautiful home away from home in the world!

Y’all keep an eye on our Instagram and our website to follow all the wonderful changes coming your way soon! You might not see as much here on the blog anymore, as we all feel that website and Instagram need to be more our focus. There’s a time for everything under the sun, and now is the time for the blog to take a little rest! ๐Ÿ™‚

If you’d like to keep up with me and Dempsey’s surgery, please feel free to follow along on my blog and Instagram!

Be sure to say hello to Bailey Clunan and Hannah Mason next time you’re in the store, and keep an eye out for a little insta-feature on each of them! I’ll still be around until the 20th, so you might see me for a couple more weeks, too ๐Ÿ˜‰

I’ll try to keep it together as I close this post by simply saying a big THANK YOU to everyone who has made my time here valuable, memorable, and beautiful. It’s been the absolute best 12 years of my life ๐Ÿ™‚ I’ll always have a very special place in my heart for SummerHouse!
