#SHGoesToMarket

Today is officially our market team’s first day at High Point Market! Get excited! Lisa, Marty, and Katy are already dominating #HPMKT like the pros that they are. The plan is for them to gram their way through showroom after showroom, looking for the best of the best to bring back home to Mississippi!

I’m not sure how many of y’all have been to High Point, or another similar furniture market, but it really is quite a service that these ladies are providing for the SummerHouse family and for YOU, our lovely clients! Of course market is really fun, but it is straight up exhausting!

The last time I went, I was newly pregnant with my first child so I was already wo-slap-out just due to first trimester fatigue. But then you add in all the walking and standing and talking and networking and brain-powering through showroom after showroom, and you’ll find yourself a tired mamma jamma! Then add in the early mornings and the late nights. Like I said, it’s definitely fun, with tons going on, but it will tire ya right out. Somehow though, at the end of it all, dozens of pretty new vignettes, brand new lines that have never graced our showrooms before, multiple one-of-a-kinds, and so much fresh inspiration end up at SummerHouse just for you! Honestly, you guys are the driving force behind our market trips.

#SHGoesToMarket

#SHGoesToMarket

#SHGoesToMarket

To stay as on top of this market trip as you can, be sure you’re not only following SummerHouse on Instagram, but Marty, Lisa, and Katy on their personal accounts as well! Our special market hashtag is #SHGoesToMarket, so go on and give that hashtag a follow too! 😉

I know I look forward to following along on their journey through market, wishing I could be with them! I hope you enjoy following, too! 😉 Y’all have a great day! XO!

“That’s The Thing About Mississippi…”

Mississippi Pearl project feature by Lisa Palmer of SummerHouse in Milieu Magazine

“That’s the thing about Mississippi, everything we do has a story behind it.”

We adore this quote from our lead designer Lisa Palmer, which came from the write up in the current issue of Milieu Magazine (pinch us!!! Dream come true!) about the cabin she designed for some dear, dear friends of SummerHouse. This cabin has a rich, deep story, which is told in the pages of this issue of Milieu. We encourage you to stop by your favorite magazine stand and pick up a copy of this stunning issue. You will not be disappointed by the photos and the article about Mississippi Pearl. Here’s a peek at what you have to look forward to.

First Impressions

Fabulous entries that make the best first impressions // SummerHouse Interior Design // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Mama always said, “It’s important to make a good first impression.”

Well, as always, mama was right. And she wasn’t just talking about when you meet someone. She also meant when it comes to your home! Making a positive, warm first impression on a guest in your home is of the utmost importance. Even if your entryway isn’t grandiose or filled with collectors’ pieces from around the globe, it still speaks volumes. Let your entry speak for you, telling your guests to make themselves at home. You just tend to the hugs, handshakes, and showing everyone in to where the party is!

Here are some of our favorite entries, all created by SummerHouse designers. Some big, some small, but all welcoming. And all making mama proud by making a fantastic first impression 😉

Space Transformed

SummerHouse Interior Designer Lisa Palmer took a completely empty home and turned it into a cozy, masculine bachelor pad // www.alwayssummerblog.com

There is a brand new magazine out in Mississippi called VERVE, and one of Lisa’s projects landed on the cover of the current issue! Having one of our designers’ projects featured is always such an honor, especially when it winds up on the cover of the publication!

This space was designed by our leading lady Lisa Palmer. It was a complete and total transformation, as this client started with an entirely blank slate. “The first time I went to this client’s house, he had one rug and four or five pieces of furniture. That was it!”

Lisa took his empty house and made it a rich, cozy, masculine home. Neither Lisa nor her client could have been more pleased with the result!

That Time Lisa Took Over Traditional Home’s Instagram

You may remember the three day span where our very own Lisa Palmer was solely in charge of Traditional Home’s instagram account!! She did such a good job that we wanted to commemorate those posts here on Always Summer. Each photo below is linked to the original Insta post, so feel free to click and give the post a like if you haven’t already! Many of the posts have even more photos than what we’re showing here, so you’re definitely going to want to flip through those if you haven’t already.

Lisa, we are so proud of the job you did! You showcased your work, our stores, our designers, the Jackson metro area, and Mississippi SO WELL!

Here are Lisa’s posts:

// POST 1 //

Lisa Palmer takes over Traditional Home's Instagram // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Good morning, y’all! I’m @lpdesignlove of @shopsummerhousefrom the wonderful state of Mississippi. I am beyond thrilled to be taking over the Instagram account of @traditionalhomeand showing you around my beautiful city of Jackson, along with stories and anecdotes (I am a true southerner, after all) and giving you a glimpse into an interior designer’s busy life. I’ll even give you a taste of jazz and blues and Mississippi barbecue. Strap on your seatbelts… It’s gonna be a bumpy but enjoyable ride! #designertakeover

// POST 2 //

Lisa Palmer takes over Traditional Home's Instagram // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Hey y’all! It’s me, @lpdesignlove, again for #designertakeover. How about lunch at one of my favorite spots in Jackson? @thepigandpint is barbecue at its best! And you can’t have bbq without pig! (and I’m jewish!) This joint is not for the vegans of the world, but, hey… We have that too! Here you gotta put the feed bag on ‘cause it is eatin’ time! There is a long standing feud about the greatest barbecue. From Mississippi to St. Louis to Memphis to Texas, we ALL think we have the best! But we in Mississippi know we have it locked! To all the interior designers out there, we have to stop and have a good lunch, right? This work is hard!

// POST 3 //

Lisa Palmer takes over Traditional Home's Instagram // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Hey again! @lpdesignlove for the @traditionalhome#DesignerTakeover showing you one of my recent projects that sits in the center of Jackson, Mississippi in one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city. It was a huge renovation for my client, as this Greek Revival home was built in 1950. The rooms were colorful and furnishings were full of pattern and fringes. #WeveAllBeenThere! It was time to make it their home! And… we are always tweaking and adding. That’s the beauty of having a great home, isn’t it? What is interesting about the property is, although it’s in an established neighborhood, my clients have the sweetest Amish chicken coop with live chickens and fresh eggs for their morning omelettes! They even have a couple of peacocks! There is a dog run, an underground knocked out wine cellar, and a small farm all on 8.2 acres. Swipe to see more of this beautiful home. #countrycometotown #alittleofbothworlds#theperfecthome

It’s @lpdesignlove from @shopsummerhouse here again for #DesignerTakeover! Art is extremely personal AND important to the overall design of a room. I won’t show a client a piece of art for a space just because it looks good over the sofa. It has to evoke a positive emotional response. They have to LOVE their art. It also has to have the “feel” that I am trying to achieve for the space. I am very fortunate to have amazing art galleries to work with. Not only will I select art from the Jackson area, but just 3 hours south is New Orleans and just east are Birmingham and Atlanta! Here is a project I worked on that I literally built the design around my client’s FABulous art collection. Even the walls are works of art: A local artisan hand painted a lacquered strie in the dining room, and the hand painted stencil on the powder room wall was perfectly executed as far as scale and color palette.

Hey all you music lovers! It’s @lpdesignlove from @shopsummerhouse for #DesignerTakeover. Although Interior Design is my number one gig, I’ve been performing on stages around the southeast as a jazz vocalist for over 25 years. To quote one of Mississippi’s greatest sons, B.B.King -“Jazz is the big brother of the blues. If a guy’s playing blues like we play, he’s in high school. When he starts playing jazz, it’s like going on to college”. Mississippi is the true home of the blues and @HalandMals in Jackson is the venue to pop over to to get your jazz and blues fix. Tuesday night is Jazz night and musicians from all over sit in to hone their jazz skills. So, every Tuesday night is different. But that’s jazz. Did you know that Mississippi has more grammy winners than any other state?? Music is in our blood. As a jazz singer I can’t begin to count how many nights I’ve spent at Hal and Mal’s performing. Some of my best memories are within these walls. I think the microphone still has my lipstick stain! 💋#mississippimusic#mississippiculture

Color is coming back! 💙 Hey again y’all! @lpdesignlovehijacking @traditionalhome for their #DesignerTakeover! Yesss… color IS back. Whether you love a room with lots of color or just pop your favorite color in an all white room, it always works. Don’t get me wrong… I love an all white room, if it is done correctly, but we have been in need of color for a while now. In this project, I had a client who loves any shade of blue. That is what makes her happy and that is what I did. From azure to cobalt, we incorporated her blue crush as much as possible… and she LOVES her home! Blue is a timeless color and you can use it with abandon! Swipe for more from this beautiful home. Photos by @jallsopp

Welcome back @traditionalhome followers!! @lpdesignlove for TH’s #DesignerTakeover here! As the owner and principal designer of SummerHouse in Ridgeland and Oxford MS, I wear a LOT of hats! But the one hat I am most proud to wear is mentoring and working with my staff of 22, who frankly, are the hardest working people I know. 11 are Interior Designers and their design assistants. Their talent is extraordinary and they make me BEYOND proud. (Swipe for more photos of their work.) Our 8800 square foot Ridgeland showroom opened in 2006 and we just brought another SummerHouse to the super cool city of Oxford, MS in December of 2016. (Post about that coming soon!) Running this large operation takes a village for SURE! It just so happens our village is beautifully adorned with skilled, experienced, and wickedly talented individuals!

Hotty Toddy from Oxford, Mississippi!! @lpdesignlove in for #DesignerTakeover ‘bout to tell y’all a little bit about this place. A little over a year ago, I made the decision to put my second store location on the square in this quintessentially charming American town. What draws people from all over the world to Oxford? Maybe Ole Miss and tailgating in the grove (NOTHING like it!) Or it could be that it’s the literary center of the south, where Rowan Oak, (pictured) the home of William Faulkner so beautifully sits and more presently, ties to Willie Morris and John Grisham. Or maybe it’s the bars, five star hotels, restaurants and unique shops around the historic square. Or possibly John Currence, the James Beard award winning chef at @bigbadbreakfast and @citygroceryoxford. And you have to put Taylor Grocery on your bucket list! THE best catfish, hushpuppies, turnip greens and good ole bluegrass/gospel played by men as old as your grandpa! HYDR!

Let’s talk about gorgeous areas to have al fresco dining! @Lpdesignlove for #DesignerTakeoverhere. There is nothing quite like a warm summer evening. It seriously is my favorite time of the day/year. Especially if you have this back of the house porch that overlooks a lake with a family of white swans! Y’all might recognize this house. This project was featured in the March/April @traditionalhome. I wanted to show you all a little bit more of the spectacular porch that my clients LOVE to relax on and have their evening meals with friends. It was really important for me to provide comfortable lounge seating, and always ample side tables to set drinks on. The large concrete dining table is not only functional, but with our humidity and pollen dust, it is easily cleanable. When my clients entertain, this is where most of the fun people hang out! || 📷: @jallsopp

Hello again, TH readers! @Lpdesignlove from @shopsummerhouse for #DesignerTakeover here to tell you about one of Jackson, MIssissippi’s oldest and best corner cafes: the Mayflower Cafe. If anyone saw The Help, you might remember that Skeeter and Stuart had dinner here. They probably had the Redfish Jane or the Breaded Veal Cutlets with Tomato Gravy. Did you know that the director and writer of The Help are both from Mississippi? The coolest thing about this place is that dinner at The Mayflower on a Saturday night is a social event! You seriously run into EVERYONE you know. So… you better carve out enough time for conversation and fellowship and come hungry! #mississippi #themayflower || 📷: @nashker

Happy afternoon! @lpdesignlove from @shopsummerhousefor #DesignerTakeover! I’m dreaming of crawling into this bed after my incredibly busy day! Unfortunately it is not MY bedroom and I’m sure my client would be surprised if she saw me cutting Z’s in her guest room! This room was designed on a budget although it looks like a million bucks. The textural throw at the foot is from @potterybarn and even the paper pendant (which you can’t see in this photo, but you can see in the instastory!) was a super price. The only splurge is the silk velvet pillow on the bed. But… nothing else looks or FEELS like silk velvet! Some things are non-negotiable. 😃 || 📷: @agoodsonphoto

@lpdesignlove signing off of TH’s #DesignerTakeover! I hope y’all have enjoyed hanging out with me this week and allowing me to show where and how this city and state have influenced me and my design aesthetic. I am honored to have Traditional Home feature this project on their cover of the March/April edition. THANK YOU for the support. I also feel that I have gained some really good friends. I might just miss this a little! 😢 But I have to get back to work! XXOO #socialmediaisafulltimejob#summerhousestyle

Let’s talk about paint colors, shall we?

Since the publication of the March/April issue of Traditional Home, we’ve received multiple inquiries, not only about the published home, but about paint colors from many of our projects and photos!

We decided a blog post all about our most asked about paint colors was in order! 😉 Without further adieu…

Ask Lisa: All White Rooms

All White Rooms: The DOs and DON'Ts from Lisa Palmer of SummerHouse // #interiordesign

We’ve added a fun new video to our YouTube channel as the first in a new series we’re going to start doing called ASK LISA! We asked for y’all to submit questions to us a few weeks back, and we got some GREAT responses! The one we started with was,

“Can you ever go overboard with white when designing a room?”

Watch the video to see Lisa’s response!

So to recap:

  1. Hire a professional! All white rooms can be hard.
  2. Make sure to mix textures.
  3. Add interesting woods!
  4. You do have to worry about dirt. Make sure to use 100% acrylic or Crypton fabrics when possible.
  5. Get a throw to protect your sofas and chairs from pets.
  6. Again, we reiterate, hire a professional! 🙂 (We love doing all white rooms! Hint, hint!)

We have several questions lined up to get Lisa’s opinion on, but we’d love more! So feel free to submit your own questions for Lisa in the comments below! We’d love to hear what you guys want to know from her!

Thank y’all so much for sopping by today! Have a great week!

Why Hire A SummerHouse Designer?

Why should you hire a SummerHouse designer? Our owner and lead designer Lisa Palmer answers that question and dispels a few myths that exist about working with us! Keep reading to see what LP has to say on the matter!

“The thought of hiring a designer can be a bit stressful. Will my designer get my style and produce rooms that I will truly love? Will she send me a huge bill? How do I know she will do what she says? What if she doesn’t communicate well? There are so many concerns, so why hire a SummerHouse designer?

Well, to be honest… I think our designers are the best in the area. Truly! A picture tells a thousand words, so the fact that you can see our work on our website’s interior design section and our social media sites like Instagram and Facebook will seriously help in the decision making. Also the fact that we have two stores in Mississippi showcasing a beautiful mix of furniture, accessories, art and bedding, shows our clients who we are. They can see, touch, and experience the quality of the pieces that we stock and can special order. We also work as a team in most cases, so our clients get not only their preferred SH designer, but most often, we will ask opinions from our team members for confirmation that what we are presenting are the best pieces for the spaces. Our many years of experience in the market, our continuing education with our furniture and accessory manufacturers, the fact that our designers are degreed Interior Designers, and our high level of personal client service are all big factors in why hiring a SH designer is a win-win.

Why Hire A SummerHouse Interior Designer? // www.alwayssummerblog.com

As far as the cost of hiring a SH designer, we are great at working within budgets when they are given to us! We carry some high-end lines, yes, but we also have several outstanding “meat and potatoes” manufacturers who make beautiful, quality products at more affordable prices. We do not charge for our time when you are purchasing from us, so you will not receive a bill for our time in addition to the quote you are presented. You know what you are getting and what it will cost before you ever get out your checkbook.

Since we are local, we have a reputation to maintain, if I’m being quite honest! Our clients are not just customers. They are our friends. The people we run into at Kroger. The people our kids are in school with. They’re not just a number to us like they may be to a big box store. It is my goal for every single person who shops with SummerHouse to leave having had a great experience. People talk. So I don’t want to leave any room for them to be able to talk poorly about my baby! (SummerHouse, that is!)

Why Hire A SummerHouse Interior Designer? // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Lastly, to piggyback on that last point, because we are a local business with a great client base, we have grown to a point where our manufacturers care about keeping us really happy! Our business office and warehouse staff are great at dealing with claims, damages, and other not-so-fun areas of the business so our clients don’t have to. When you order from SummerHouse and something comes in dented or broken, we take care of that for you. When you order from a larger retailer, in most cases, YOU will be the one making the claim on the damaged piece, which is no fun for you. We want your furniture buying process to be enjoyable!

We love what we do, we love getting to make a difference in the lives of our clients, and we value your trust. That is why you should hire a SummerHouse designer!”

Our Favorite Fall Paint Colors

It’s always fun to round up our design staff members’ favorite paint colors! We love paint colors, and we know you guys do too, so we’re here with another round of beautiful faves! This edition is, of course, FALL themed 🙂

The SummerHouse Designers' Favorite Fall Paint Colors // www.alwayssummerblog.com

When we think of fall, we certainly think about warm taupes, grays, and browns, as well as rich colors like saturated greens, cozy oranges, and deep reds. Our design staff picks hit on all of those inviting fall color families. Let’s see who chose what color(s) and maybe even get a little insight on why these colors speak to them!

The SummerHouse Designers' Favorite Fall Paint Colors // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Sherwin Williams Tavern Taupe, picked by SH Ridgeland designer Lana Pate.

“I’ve used this color in projects before and it is always so warm and cozy,” she shares.

Sherwin Williams Copper Mountain, picked by SH Ridgeland Design Assistant Krystle Short.

How inviting is this door?!

Benjamin Moore Raccoon Hollow, picked by SH Ridgeland Interior Designer Katy Sanders.

“I used this color at my parents’ house and it is just gorgeous!”

Farrow and Ball Studio Green, picked by SH Oxford Interior Designer Rebecca Cornelius.

“I would use Studio Green on anything from kitchen cabinets to a study or even a small bathroom. I would use it with brushed gold hardware pulls or knobs and Kelly Wearstler Tableau Coastal tile in the kitchen, cream moulding in a bathroom and I may even put a natural, loose woven Cowtan and Tout grasscloth over it so the green would show through. In the study, I would place or a Rosecore Vanilla sky rug and cream throw in with natural raw wood accents. Keep it simple but also keep it neutrally and modern textured so it will be visually pleasing and not too dull.”

Benjamin Moore Briarwood, picked by SH Ridgeland Design Assistant Camille Parker

“It is the perfect chameleon warm paint color for Fall that can be transitioned into any time of year, but I love that it is the quintessential warm color perfect for cuddling up near the fireplace!”

Sherwin Williams Tiki Hut, picked by SH Ridgeland Interior Designer Lana Pate

Benjamin Moore Knoxville Gray, picked by SH Social Media Director Laurel Donahoo

“I could see this color on the wall in a room with few windows. In a darker room, it would add the right amount of cozy, the right amount of color, and would look killer with rich leathers, plaid pillows or throws, and a couple of whiskey cocktails in front of a wood-burning fire!”

The SummerHouse Designers' Favorite Fall Paint Colors // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Benjamin Moore Fallen Timber, picked by SH Owner and Lead Designer Lisa Palmer

“This lovely shade of gray, or wait… it’s brown… or maybe it’s ochre. That is precisely why I love it. You really can’t put a name on it. It feels like earth and wintry leaves all rolled into one. I would pair this wall or accent color with possibly a Ralph Lauren wool plaid, a mohair in plum and and a burnt caramel leather. Throw on some logs and candle light and you’ve got a party for two!”

Sherwin Williams Hunt Club, picked by SH Ridgeland Design Assistant Anabel Webb.

“I recently painted my bottom kitchen cabinets with SW Hunt Club, a deep emerald green, and my top cabinets white and its super inviting. I’m still really into the jewel tone movement, which to me, in a way, is very “Fall.”

The SummerHouse Designers' Favorite Fall Paint Colors // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Benjamin Moore Gray Cashmere, picked by SH Ridgeland Interior Designer Katherine Shelton

“Benjamin Moore Gray Cashmere is such an amazing color to paint any space. This color would work all year long but if you designed your room with warm brown velvets and oatmeal linen paired with Ben Moore Gray Cashmere, your room would feel very cozy for fall and winter.”

The SummerHouse Designers' Favorite Fall Paint Colors // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Sherwin Williams Spiced Cider, picked by SH Ridgeland Interior Designer Lana Pate

“If someone is fond of a pop of color like I am, Spiced Cider 7702 is a beautiful shade.”

Benjamin Moore River Silt, picked by SH Ridgeland Design Assistant Krystle Short

Benjamin Moore Narragansett Green, picked by SH Ridgeland Interior Designer Elish Moon

“I’m very cautious about bold colors, but a study ended up being the perfect opportunity to take a risk! My client and I chose Benjamin Moore’s Narragansett Green HC-157, and this room exudes fall!”

( We actually plan to show y’all more from this study Elish designed, so stay tuned in the coming weeks! )

Naturally Chic

You may remember several months back when we went on a social media posting frenzy about the beautiful Atlanta Homes and Lifestyles show house that Lisa got to be a part of! Lisa designed the upstairs lounge in this magnificent home:

“Architect Yong Pak of Pak Heydt & Associates and builder Michael Ladisic of Ladisic Fine Homes transformed a James Means-designed home in the heart of Buckhead in its Kingswood neighborhood. The six-bedroom home is sited on 2 acres of land on top of a hill in quiet cul de sac, overlooking a preserve and recreational fields (read: no rear neighbors!). Charleston-inspired cobblestone and brick driveway, heart of pine floors, slate roof.”

Now that the issue with the showhouse feature is out, we can share the room with you! Here’s the spread:

Beachy Bold

We are big fans of a coastal-inspired space, since coast equals beach, and beach equals summer! (We aren’t called SummerHouse for nothin!)

We also love when a bold velvet has the opportunity to enter the scene.

Absolute design magic happens when beachy and bold come together seamlessly, creating a livable, unexpected, totally gorgeous room! That’s exactly what happened in the guest room of one of Lisa’s favorite clients, who was in need of an update.

That big blue velvet and that serene Lynn Sanders painting on a canvas of white walls and white bedding just created the happiest vibe! We also love the feel of the herringbone rug, textured side tables, and stunning blue lamps! The shell mirror, made by the client herself, adds just the right amount of authentic beachiness to the room.

This client’s guests are sure to feel right at home when they get the opportunity to spend a night or two in this happy space!

We hope you’re enjoying the end of your summer and taking it all in before school starts back!

The Best Soft Bedroom Colors

Last week we shared our designers’ picks for dark and cozy bedroom paint colors. Today, we’re sharing their brighter, airier picks! Paint colors can be very tricky, so whenever you are in doubt, hire a designer! We promise that you’ll save time and money in the long run if you do it right the first time. Our designers actually love picking out paint colors, so with any one of them helping you, you cannot go wrong!

With all that said, here are some of their favorites when it comes to softer paint colors!

Design Assistant Camille at SummerHouse Ridgeland says, “I enjoy a pretty, crisp white, like White Dove, for a bedroom because it gives a clean slate to work with when selecting the main upholstery items. You can accent white walls with Drapery, Pillows, and maybe a unique bedside table or chest.”

SummerHouse | Oxford Interior Designer Laurie Conway’s pick is Lullaby by Sherwin Williams.

“I love BM November Rain,” says Ridgeland Interior Designer Katy Sanders.”It is a beautiful greige green you cannot go wrong with!”

“You know me, I’m one extreme or the other,” says SummerHouse designer and owner Lisa Palmer of her picks. “I love something black like Onyx, or I go with White Dove. Oh, and I love Sherwin Williams White Dogwood that I used in a client’s bedroom. It is the prettiest pink.”

“Pale Oak by Benjamin Moore is such a brilliant color!” says Ridgeland Interior Designer Katherine Shelton. “I love it on the walls of a master bedroom. It will go warmer or cooler depending on the fabrics and finishes you surround it with.”

Oxford Interior Designer Rebecca Cornelius says “Collingwood or Revere Pewter BM are soft neutrals & light warm greys that you can use anywhere indoors safely.  Simply White and White Dove are the best all round go-to whites.  You can put anything with them!”

“I’ve noticed when choosing paint colors I tend to be drawn toward colors with a greige undertone,” says Ridgeland Interior Designer Elish Moon. “Although I haven’t tried it, Benjamin Moore’s “Gray Wisp” seems like it would lend itself well to creating a serene environment. This soft color can go blue or green, depending on the room, and is low commitment and high style!”

Ridgeland Design Assistant Anabel Webb’s lighter pick is Decorator’s White, although right now she’s really more into the deeper hues!
