Kimberly Moore Art

Kimberly Moore Art at SummerHouse

I am thrilled to share with you that we are now carrying the art of a fabulously talented artist, Kimberly Moore! All of us up here love her style and her eye, and we are honored to have her work adorning our Ridgeland showroom.

Let’s get to know Kimberly a bit better together, shall we?!

Laurel: Can you give us an overview of Kimberly in a nutshell! 🙂

Kimberly: I am married and have 3 children and a new grandchild! I grew up in South Florida, lived 18 years in Atlanta in my early 20s, then moved back to South Florida where I am now.

Laurel: Beautiful! South Florida is so pretty. So how would you describe your artistic style?

Kimberly: I would describe my style as abstract expressionism. I am heavily influenced by ancient Greek and Roman civilization and painters from the 1940s and 1950s.

Laurel: How cool! Now, I know from reading your About page that you draw from life experiences when you’re crafting your art. Can you tell us about a specific life experience and how it inspired a specific piece?

Kimberly: Sure! One of my favorite paintings came as a result of the impression left on me after I visited Pompeii. It was a profound experience for me and I find that images and markings rise to the surface of my conscience as I am painting based on such experiences.

Laurel: Very neat. I love that! I also read that you are open to doing commissioned pieces. Can you tell us about one of the most unique or commission requests you’ve ever received?!

Kimberly: I received a commission from a wonderful couple, one an interior designer and the other a graphic designer. Throughout the commission process I would send previews which they would critique with such incredible depth and understanding that they actually gave me a beautiful gift in allowing me to view and see my work in an objective way. I will be forever grateful to Keith and Jason!

Laurel: What a lovely way of viewing such process! I love that attitude, and I know you learned so much. Now let’s move on to how you finish these pieces… I notice that many of the frames used on your collage and ink pieces (and possibly some of your larger abstracts?!) appear to be vintage or found. Can you tell us about the significance of your framing?

Kimberly: I spend early weekend mornings scouring Estate Sales and Flea Markets looking for vintage frames. It is a leftover habit from my antiquing days. I have never lost the thrill of the hunt! I let the frame dictate the style of art I think is appropriate.

Laurel: Well they are perfect and just give an extra element of uniqueness to your work. Now, what else do we need to know about Kimberly Moore Art? 🙂

Kimberly: I spent the majority of my career in the Antique business and also was an Appraiser of Antiques and Vintage Goods which has definitely honed by eye. I am OBSESSED with Interior Design! I painted as long as I can remember but always for myself. I had been regularly doing the Scott Antique Show in Atlanta and my husband encouraged me to put a few of my paintings out for sale. I was so unsure of myself in the beginning that I signed my work ‘Lillian Howell’ which is my Grandmothers maiden name. (She is 97 and was thrilled to be known as an “artist”). My art was purchased by a number of very well known designers so I was encouraged to keep painting. I am so thrilled that people seem drawn to my art and now I paint full time (and sign my own name!)

Laurel: As you should! It’s absolutely stunning. I hope to have a piece of my own one of these days! 🙂 Well, I think that about wraps us up here. Thank you so much for your time, Kimberly. We love your work!!

Heavy On The Wall Color

Heavy on the Wall Color: Nine Stunning Rooms With Dark, Moody Walls

Maybe it’s the gray day outside, but today I feel super compelled to share some of my favorite interiors with dark walls! These moody rooms are anything but dreary, though. I actually love the life that a deep, dark paint color gives. 🙂 And a dark texture or wall covering just adds all the interest. Don’t you think?

All of these rooms were designed by SummerHouse designers. And they’re all just fabulous! Take a peek–

Our designers have touched on their favorite deep gray/brown/almost black paint colors in these blog posts:

The Best Paint Colors for Small Spaces
Bold Paint Colors
Our Favorite Fall Paint Colors
The Best Non-White Neutrals
Winter Gray Paint Colors

I absolutely love each of these spaces. They’re moody, yet therapeutic, if you ask me! 😉 And a great dark wall automatically ups the style of the space. Be sure to check out our Projects page and our Galleries By Room to get some more inspo. You might even find a few more dark spaces I didn’t include here! The hunt is ON. 😉

Ok you guys… Thanks so much for stopping by! I hope your week is off to a great start despite the grossness outside in our neck of the weeks. Check back soon, as we will be posting updates about MAYMOD in the very near future!

You are amazing!

The Best Non-White Neutral Paint Colors

The posts we do over here on Always Summer focusing on paint colors are always our most popular ones BY FAR, so that reinforces the idea that y’all love to get our team’s opinion on the topic!

Paint colors are definitely tricky. I have heard designers asking other designers up here to look at paint colors with them because they really can be difficult! If you have even a slight doubt about which paint color to choose, I highly recommend getting a trained Interior Designer to weigh in. I promise you’ll be glad when you make the best decision on the front end rather than after multiple tries!

This edition of paint color help is all about those NON-WHITE NEUTRALS. Of course we love a good shade of white (our favorites rounded up here, and our favorite white-on-white pairings here) but when you’re looking to go rich rather than airy, white simply will not do! These non-white neutrals are all beautiful easy-to-work-with colors that provide richness and interest. Read on to see who loves what color and why!

The Best Non-White Neutral Paint Colors // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Interior Designer Emily Sanders: Oakmoss Green by Sherwin Williams
“I love bringing the outdoors inside in airy, light filled areas of the home. Sherwin Williams Oakmoss green is a neutral to me and since it’s a bit darker can make your white and cream pieces pop!”

The Best Non-White Neutral Paint Colors // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Interior Designer Katy Sanders: Dragon’s Breath by Benjamin Moore
“This is a dark neutral that missed well with both warm and cool tones.”

The Best Non-White Neutral Paint Colors // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Interior Designer Lindsey Townsend: Chalk Gray by Pratt & Lambert
“Chalk Gray is a beautiful neutral. It’s a very soft warm gray and can go with practically anything!”

The Best Non-White Neutral Paint Colors // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Owner and Principal Interior Designer Lisa Palmer: Onyx by Benjamin Moore
“I painted the walls and trim in my master bedroom this color and heightened up the drama! I chose an eggshell finish for the walls and a satin finish for the trim, cabinets and crown. All of my bedding, drapery and my bed is out of an ivory linen so the overall feel is really cozy and not dark at all. The carpet is a wool woven loop in a light caramel color so the main pieces in this space are light. I punched the bedding with 1 large long pillow in a deep charcoal and ivory velvet graphic to bring the wall color onto my sea of ivory linen. This super dark neutral is a wonderful background for a collection of charcoal or pencil sketches in various old gold frames. Take a chance and go dark!”

Interior Designer Elish Moon: Edgecomb Gray by Benjamin Moore
“I was recently on a church renovation committee and decisions were challenging because the church was being updated, but in phases as finances allowed. I had to find a neutral paint color that worked with the new cooler color choices that also wouldn’t fight
with the warmer finishes in the more dated areas of the church for the time being. Edgecomb Gray was an ideal choice. It was beautiful, freshened the space, but also married well with the existing finishes.”

The Best Non-White Neutral Paint Colors // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Interior Designer Jordan Carter: Balboa Mist by Benjamin Moore
“One of my favorite paint colors is Benjamin Moore’s Balboa Mist. It has more depth than a white, but is light and neutral enough to work with any furniture or accent colors that you desire!”

The Best Non-White Neutral Paint Colors // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Interior Designer Jenni Hilbun: Agreeable Gray and Amazing Gray from Sherwin Williams
“It just so happens that very recently I was asked for a little color from my client. After I freaked out (“Why??? Color is so… Colorful!?”), I came through with two options that leave the feeling of color but still play nicely with just about everyone (meaning other fabrics of course.) Amazing Gray and Agreeable Gray. Two outstanding “colors” from Sherwin Williams. Of course having a lifelong affinity with the Baptist Hymnal and now the Methodist version, I lean toward Amazing Gray! Just tickles me.”

Blog Editor, Former Design Assistant, and Design Enthusiast, yours truly, Laurel Donahoo: Desert Twilight and Dark Olive from Benjamin Moore
“With the help of my friend Elish, we selected Desert Twilight for my husband’s new office. We needed something warm and masculine that could serve as a nice backdrop for some colorful art and bunch of stuffed ducks, turkeys, and deer. So. many. animals… But I digress! We used this color on wall and trim and it turned out beautifully. And in a little addition we are currently doing in our home, I did some research and selected Dark Olive for a new rec room of sorts. We are using this on the trim and walls as well. I know it’s going to be gorgeous. I can’t wait to see this room completed!”

Save The Date for MAY MOD

MAYMOD Runway Event

MAYMOD Runway Event

MAYMOD Runway Event

MAYMOD Runway Event

MAYMOD Runway Event

I. AM. SO. EXCITED.

Do y’all remember that killer fashion show we put on last year with our friends at Noggins Salon? The above pictures may help. 😉 It was A Midsummer Night’s Runway Event with all the glittery, fairy-esque goodness we could squeeze through our doors. Well, we are back for round two, and it’s going to be even cooler than it was last year (if that is even possible! Because if you were here, you remember how amazing it was. Such a fun night!) Our theme this time is MAY MOD. We’re going all modern in the month of May and the ideas we have circulating are simply great.

I think the reason I’m most excited about this event is because it’s benefiting Magnolia Speech School. MSS has become very dear to my heart because my third baby, sweet little mister Dempsey Donahoo (picture of his happy face here!), was born in November with complete deafness. He has profound bilateral sensorineural hearing loss, so my husband and I have started the process to get our baby hearing and speaking, and a major player in Dempsey’s journey has been (and will continue to be) Magnolia Speech School. We’ve begun early intervention therapy with MSS and we adore our interventionist. He is a doll and is a fabulous representative for this school that is doing so much to help the hearing impaired kiddos around our area!

We have a lot of moving parts and a few more details we are trying to nail down before we can present the full lineup of shops participating in the show, but for now…

SAVE THE DATE! Thursday, May 9th at SummerHouse in Ridgeland. 7 til 9 p.m.  Fashion for the whole family!

Tickets will be available for online purchase once we get that set up. They’ll be $20 for general admission or $120 for admission plus a reserved, runway-side seat. Also, two words: SWAG BAGS. But more on all that later!

MAYMOD Runway Event

Make sure you’re following SummerHouse on Instagram to stay well updated on everything regarding #MayModness (<< our official event hashtag.) We hope you’ll make plans to attend!

As always, thank you for checking in today. I hope your week is going smoothly so far! 🙂

A Local Love Affair with Leontine Linens // Lee Loves Local party at SummerHouse

Hi, friend 🙂 How are ya?

We’ve got some pretty gross weather in Mississippi this week (and sadly I think it’s supposed to stay gross through Saturday) but to reverse those blues that the weather is trying to dish out, I have some pretty pictures to share with you!

Both SummerHouse locations celebrated #LeeLovesLocal week last week with some lovely parties. I didn’t get to make it to the Oxford party, but I’ve heard reports that it was nothing short of perfect! The Ridgeland party, too, was basically perfect. We had the most stunning bedding and table linens of all time gracing our showroom floor. Leontine Linens, you are one amazing company!

Here’s a pictorial recap of our Ridgeland par-tay

Are you as taken with Leontine as we are?

A Local Love Affair with Leontine Linens

A Local Love Affair with Leontine Linens

So I told y’all about our upcoming Local Love Affair in Oxford happening February 9th HERE, but now’s the time to give y’all the info on our Ridgeland Local Love Affair on February 12th! As a reminder, this is all part of Lee Loves Local week. No, Lee is not a person, but a company! LEE Industries is an American-made upholstery company that loves their local community so much that they wanted to spread that brand of love all over the country, hence these fun events during a designated week every year! So if you live too far away to come to one of our Lee Loves Local events, try to find a LEE dealer near you and attend their event!

For our Ridgeland shop’s love affair, we’re teaming up with one of our favorite brands: Leontine Linens. This beautiful, locally owned brand out of New Orleans is coming up for a pop-up shop on Tuesday the 12th. If you haven’t seen their custom bedding and linens, you have GOT to come! They’re stunning, and all custom made, so you can make them look however you want! From 4 p.m. until 8 p.m., we will be giving away fantastic door prizes from local friend businesses, serving up bubbly and yummy little desserts, and oohing and aahing over the pretty Leontine pieces. Leontine will even do some live demonstrations at 4:30 and at 7:00 teaching us how to make the prettiest beds and set the prettiest tables. We can’t wait!

Here are some of my favorite looks created with Leontine pieces so you can get an idea of what you’ll see at this pop-up. Be sure to check out their instagram for more pretty pics (and to see who the original designers are on these spaces!)

I’m drooling. I love the range that Leontine covers! You can go a little more modern, or you can do super traditional, or land somewhere in the middle. And it’s all gorgeous! [ insert the heart eyes ]

Don’t forget that, just like at the Oxford event, we will offer 25% off all LEE items as well as off most of what we have in stock, even if it isn’t LEE. AND, enjoy 20% off custom LEE orders placed during Lee Loves Local week!

There is so much to look forward to. I hope to see y’all at this event! Let me know if y’all have any questions about anything!

Kitchen Renovation: Before & After

Before and After: A kitchen renovation by Interior Designer Katy Hines

Hey, y’all! I hope your week is off to a fantastic start! Mine sure is, due in large part to this blog post! I spent part of the day editing these photos and they just make me so happy. SummerHouse Designer Katy Sanders did a beautiful job renovating this kitchen for some clients and the results are just astounding!

Here’s what Katy was working with:

Before and After: A kitchen renovation by Interior Designer Katy Hines

This kitchen had not been updated since this house was built almost 20 years ago. The clients were open to doing whatever needed to be done to fully update it, so as you can see in the above photo, Katy fully gutted it. They moved the gas line so the cook top could go in between the windows to create a focal point. Before, there had not really been a nice place for the eye to fall, so moving that, adding the vent-a-hood, and running the backsplash all the way up to the ceiling created just that!

Before and After: A kitchen renovation by Interior Designer Katy Sanders

The island was a bit dated, so Katy straightened that up and got it looking extra fab with some cleaner lines and cute barstools. She redid all the lighting, redesigned all the cabinetry, and added wood flooring throughout to create a little warmth. She selected those beautiful Quartzite countertops and proved that mixing metal finishes can be beautiful when done correctly (ahem, like when you hire a SummerHouse designer!)

Because paint colors are always such a hot topic, I’ll go ahead and answer the question that I know many of you have in your head (because I asked it in my head, too!) Benjamin Moore Hale Navy on the paint color Katy used on the island 😉

After Katy’s magic touch, this kitchen functions better, has been brought into the current decade, and is so stunning that it made its way onto a design blog! 😉 Beautiful work, Katy Sanders. You never cease to amaze us.

Thanks so much for stopping by Always Summer! Stay warm out there 🙂

Newness

Hey y’all, and happy Monday! After a two month maternity leave getting in all the snuggles with my new little dude (who we named Dempsey — he is amazing!), I’m back in the saddle up here at SummerHouse! When I walked into work this morning, the whole showroom looked brand new to me since I haven’t been here in, well, two months! I walked around picking out new favorites and just thinking (remembering) how refreshing that SummerHouse style is 🙂 Here are a few shots of pretty happenings on the showroom that I highly recommend you come and look at for yourself!

Meet Sarah Ethridge

Today, I am so excited to introduce y’all to new(ish) Ridgeland team member Sarah Ethridge! Sarah has been with us for several months now and is such a huge help wherever she is needed. We LOVE this girl! If you stop in, you might find her updating our inventory book, helping a designer on a home visit, putting something in CAD, accessorizing the showroom floor, checking in new fabrics, and so many other things! Needless to say, things flow much more smoothly now that Sarah is part of the team 🙂 Get to know this cutie better with a fun Q&A! Meet SummerHouse employee Sarah Ethridge

Can you tell us a little about you? Where you’re from, where you’re in school, what you’re studying, about your family…

I am from Brandon (on the Rez side) and I have lived there my whole life. I graduated from Northwest Rankin High school. I am in school at Mississippi College and I have one year left. I am majoring in Interior Design and have a minor in business. My parents are still in Brandon and I have a sister who is 2 years older than me who has a degree in Graphic Design from Mississippi College. I also have a cat named Carmen that I am very obsessed with.

What’s your favorite local restaurant?

My favorite local restaurant is Saltine. I like it because I can always try something different that I have never had before and no matter what I get there it is always good. (I also get a discount when I eat there because I work at Amerigo and they are owned by the same people, so that is a bonus.)

Is there a particular piece on the showroom floor right now that you’re particularly loving? What do you love about it?

My favorite piece on the showroom floor is the black and gold mirror in the room to the left when you walk in the front door. I just love how simple and classic it looks and its shape makes it look even more beautiful.

7What’s your favorite source of design/style inspiration?

Whenever I am surrounded by creative spaces I feel more imaginative and inspired. Being somewhere new can help whenever you are trying to find some inspiration. Sometimes nature can inspire me and sometimes being in a city can inspire me. I typically get the most inspiration from being in a city environment because there are so many creative things already going on all around me.

How do you take your caffeine?

Every morning I have to have at least a cup of black coffee. I cannot function without having coffee. Sometimes in the middle of the day I will treat myself to a vanilla iced latte, but the majority of the time I just drink black coffee.

What’s the best movie you’ve seen lately and why did you love it?

The last movie I saw in theaters was Mamma Mia 2 and it was great. The scenery in the movie was amazing because it was set in Greece and I thought the costume design was great. This is the kind of movie that makes you want to drop all of your responsibilities and travel the world.

What’s a little known fact about you that makes you different?

Last semester my school did a study abroad program that I got to be a part of, so I got to study in London for a little over 3 months. I really learned a lot about their culture and got to experience so many new things. I also did a lot of traveling while I was over there. I got to go to Scotland, Ireland, Belgium, and Italy, as well as different towns throughout England. It was the best time of my life and I am very grateful that I got to be a part of it because not everyone gets an opportunity like that.

What is your favorite thing to do on a weekend off?

If I ever have a weekend off I am usually traveling somewhere. I might go to visit family or travel somewhere new. Sometimes I will even just go somewhere for the day just to get away and clear my mind.

/ / / / / / / / / /

Thank you so much, Sarah! You are one amazing and inspiring girl, you know it? Thanks for letting us get to know you in a cool new way 🙂

I hope ALL of you get to meet Sarah soon! She’s the cutest.

Y’all have a great week! XOXO from maternity leave,

Laurel 🙂

Our Designers’ Favorite Whites

Paint colors are hard. That is no secret at all! That’s why it’s so important to get a designer in on your paint color decision. You do not want to be going through the trouble of painting a room just to have to repaint it a few days later because it looks terrible! Let one of our talented designers save you a re-do by helping you pick a great color on the front end, okay?? Trust me on this one.

Now that we have that out of the way, I did poll our staff to see which white paint colors seem to work well for them most frequently. We got some great answers from everyone, so allow me to share! I personally love a white room so this post was really fun for me to put together. After we wrap up a little construction on my home, I’m sure I’ll get one of our awesome designers out to help me pick a great white to paint our new little addition! Stay tuned! 😉

Why not treat yourself for Christmas with a little wall refresh? (But don’t forget– consult a designer first if you are even the teeniest bit unsure about paint colors!)

XOXO from maternity leave,

My Maternity Leave Replacement

Hey there! Laurel here checking in one more time before the chances of me having this baby get super real! If this little baby boy isn’t here before 11/2, he is scheduled to come on that date, so I’m officially playing the waiting game now, hospital bags packed and all!

Emily Simmering at SummerHouseI wanted to introduce y’all to Emily Simmering, the incredible girl who will be filling my shoes while I’m gone for the next couple of months! Emily was one of our interns last summer so she’s familiar with how things function up here, which helps a ton! The staff knows and loves her, so she will be a very welcome addition to the mix for the holiday season! Plus, she is really good at social media so that’s a bonus 😉 If you run into her while visiting the shop, please be sure to say hey! She’s the sweetest.

I’m super comfortable leaving things in her hands as far as all the social channels. Since she’s not quite as familiar with blogging, I’ve taken the liberty of scheduling out several posts over my leave, so my voice will be popping in once a week or so over here with some fun design and other tidbits (like continuing to introduce y’all to the staff who joined our team while this little blog was down for a while!)

I hope y’all have a fantastic day, and please feel free to follow me on my personal channels to see what all I get into on maternity leave! 😉 ( Here is my blog, and here is my Instagram.)

Y’all take care of yourselves! XOXO!

Meet Hathaway McMillon

Hello, friends! I hope you had the best weekend! I wanted to pop in today and introduce you to one of the newest faces here at the SummerHouse so y’all can get to know this new designer just a little bit better! We’ve actually had a few additions to our team (at both locations) since our blog originally went down, so you’ll be meeting several new(ish) people over the coming weeks to make up for the gap!

Today, meet Hathaway. She’s our newest Interior Designer at our Ridgeland shop. She’s been a joy to get to know over the past few weeks, so I know you’ll enjoy getting to know her as well! Let’s get on with the Q&A:Meet Hathaway McMillon

Give us a little bit of background on you please ma’am!

I was born and raised in Columbus, MS. I went to Heritage Academy for High School and University of Mississippi for college. I met my husband Alex at there at Ole Miss, and I will never forget the moment I saw him at a Kappa Delta/ SAE swap!(circa 2003) I have lived in Louisiana and Texas before moving back to Mississippi. Alex and I have a 4 year old daughter named Wimberly! My parents are here in Madison, MS, so we are so excited to be close to family. I have a younger brother named Buck that is in New Orleans so we will be taking lots of road trips to see him now that we are closer.

Can you give us your design history in a nutshell?

I have ten years of interior design experience with commercial and residential design! I have worked on projects all over the United States and loved every minute and every location.

What’s your favorite local restaurant?

This is way too hard to answer, as I have missed real southern food. I always love a good margarita and Mexican food, though.

If you could visit anywhere in the world for a week, where would it be and why?

My next trip will be to the Amalfi Coast. It is a beautiful place.

How do you take your caffeine?

I start my day every morning with a large cup of Starbucks Verona coffee with sugar free vanilla creamer and a Splenda. And I sometimes have a mid day coffee, too! I have not always loved coffee… it was not until after college that I discovered this love! I also love a Diet Coke with lemon or lime

What’s a little known fact about you that makes you different?

I have red hair and I larger than life personality with love for design.

What is your favorite thing to do on a weekend off?

Spend time with my husband Alex and daughter Wimberly! We love to entertain with friends and family. I also love a good bottle of wine with a large assortment of cheeses, a fabulous candle and fresh flowers at all times.

/ / / / / / / / / /

I totally feel you on all of that, Hathaway! Thank you so much for your time! Now all of y’all need to get up to SummerHouse | Ridgeland to meet this fun gal 😉

Stay tuned for more new faces, coming your way soon!

XO,
Laurel

Hello Again!

Hello Again!

Hey, y’all! It’s been a minute since you’ve heard from us over here on Always Summer! Sorry about that… We ran into a minor issue that turned rather major, then ended up having to switch over to a whole new platform and blah, blah, blah, yada, yada, yada…. To make a long story short, WE’RE BACK!

We have also decided to take just a little different direction with the voice of our blog! I, Laurel Donahoo, editor of Always Summer since day one, will have a heavier voice over here and will be talking in the first person much more. Lisa and I hope this adds a bit of personal connection in a fun and different way!

Always Summer Editor, Laurel DonahooTo put a face with a name, this is me. I’m a Mississippi girl in my early 30s, married to my best friend with two kiddos and one on the way. I’m actually due in like a month, so you may notice another gap in posts come early November! Hopefully my maternity leave replacement and I can get some stuff together for y’all over the holidays. We shall see!

Also, this photo is from about a year ago, before I was with child! In case you wondered…

I have been at SummerHouse for 11 years now, so I kiiinda love it up here. Great design is like air to me. I am refreshed when I walk into a beautiful interior (which includes both SummerHouse locations), as great design just has a way of lifting my mood. See, great design is good for the psyche! 😉  I’m constantly inspired by the work that the designers here produce, and I love every single staff member like they were my family! I also have a passion for blogging, so y’all have no idea how thrilled I am to have Always Summer back up and running. I have my own personal blog, too, if you’d like to check that out sometime! 😉

Anyway, I’m so glad we are back up and running and I can’t wait to bring y’all some new, fun content in the coming days! Thanks for getting back on the Always Summer train with me and sharing in the love of all things Interior Design! It’s a pleasure to have you keep up with us over here 🙂

XOXO, Laurel

A Midsummer Night’s Runway Event

Boy do we have some big news to share with y’all! In case you haven’t seen us mention it on our Instagram or Facebook over the past couple of weeks, we are teaming up with our friends at Noggins Organic Salon to put on a MAJOR runway event on July 19th! This event is going to be spectacular…

Our theme is A Midsummer Night, and it is going to be simply magical. But first, allow us to give you the basics!

Our friends at Noggins approached us asking if we’d be interested in partnering on a runway show. Of course we said yes! At our first meeting, we determined a theme: A Midsummer Night. Think flowers, fairy wings, organic style, lots of white, lots of natural, magic, glitter, delicate desserts, champagne, whimsy… With a bit of an avant-garde twist in the form of lots and lots of JEWELS.

Without giving too much away, we are putting all of this on with the participation of several local boutiques and shops. This runway show will not only appeal to women, but to men and children as well, as we will have styles for the entire family represented on the catwalk! Row 10 Baby, HemlineBlithe & Vine, 4450, The Rogue, Sollberger’s, Beckham Jewelry, and Albrition’s Jewelry will present the looks. (Be sure you go and follow all of these businesses on Instagram– their accounts are linked above!– to keep up with all the fun!) Noggins Salon will do models’ hair and Galexie Glister will finish off the makeup looks.

Little Bluestem Farm will lend their floral talents and La Brioche is providing dainty desserts to make this event over the top beautiful. Y’all, we. cannot. WAIT.

Perhaps the most important thing about this evening is that all proceeds go to our friends at CARA (Community Animal Rescue and Adoption.) We love the work that this shelter does in keeping pets of all kinds safe and healthy until they find their forever homes. Did you know that CARA runs solely on donations?! They absolutely cannot keep doing their work without community support, so we are asking that each guest give a minimum $15 donation at the door. This donation will get you one entry into a raffle drawing for several INCREDIBLE prizes: Gift cards to Arco Avenue, salon services from Noggins, services from SummerHouse, jewelry, a whitening treatment from Uptown Dental, and SO much more! Additional raffle tickets will be available for purchase at $10 each. Again, all money goes to CARA!

We will end with this piece of excitement: The first 20 guests to enter A Midsummer Night’s Runway Event will be gifted an incredible swag bag. Y’all will not believe the incredible donations that have been given to these swag bags! We won’t ruin the surprise, but we will tell you this: YOU WILL WANT ONE.

Start picking out your “summer fairy best” and make plans to join us at SummerHouse on July 19th at 7 p.m. for an event unlike any other to ever hit our area! Be sure to join the Facebook event to keep updated on all event news. We can’t wait to see you!

Coffee Table Styling Tips

If there is one thing we hear often as designers, it is about the difficulty of styling a coffee table. This is in fact a difficult feat if you don’t know what you’re doing! So we are here to help 🙂

We asked each of our designers to take their favorite coffee table on our showroom floors, clear it completely off, and style it as if it was their own. We feel very inspired by the tables they put together, and we picked up some helpful tips along the way! Have a look at each of their styles, then keep reading for a handful of style tricks and tips.

Coffee Table Styling Tips

A few things to keep in mind when styling a coffee table:

  • Be sure to vary the heights of the accessories you add. This adds an incredible amount of interest.
  • Mixing old/rustic with modern/new can be fun, if this is in keeping with the style of the rest of the room.
  • Pick a simple color story and stick to it.
  • Add interest with a metallic accessory.
  • When in doubt, coffee table books.
  • Trays and boxes add organization, layering, and function. If your coffee table is an upholstered piece, a tray can also serve as a place to set a drink.
  • Is your coffee table in a room where guests tend to gather? Add a game, or a decanter and cocktail glasses, or an conversation piece from your recent travels. Let your coffee table make your job as a host just a little bit easier!

Here are a few more pretty shots from these styled tables. We hope you find some good inspiration! And please do not hesitate to call a designer for help! That is what we do! 😉

First Impressions

Fabulous entries that make the best first impressions // SummerHouse Interior Design // www.alwayssummerblog.com

Mama always said, “It’s important to make a good first impression.”

Well, as always, mama was right. And she wasn’t just talking about when you meet someone. She also meant when it comes to your home! Making a positive, warm first impression on a guest in your home is of the utmost importance. Even if your entryway isn’t grandiose or filled with collectors’ pieces from around the globe, it still speaks volumes. Let your entry speak for you, telling your guests to make themselves at home. You just tend to the hugs, handshakes, and showing everyone in to where the party is!

Here are some of our favorite entries, all created by SummerHouse designers. Some big, some small, but all welcoming. And all making mama proud by making a fantastic first impression 😉
